Errol and Me

21 Mar

Well, now we have read all the interesting comments on “The Life and Work of  Errol Flynn”, which unexpectedly for me sparked off great dialogue between our fellow bloggers and really got that great contrast emerging between people, could I perhaps ask you to take the bait and get the high standard articles going on this sublime website and  continue to comment honestly on “Errol and Me” by Nora. For myself, at the time when I bought this fabulous discovery, I found it of enormous value trying to find out more on the enigmatic Errol, I learned a lot from it. It was an “eye opener” for me years ago, so “open” and well put together. Occasionally, I read a bit from this excellent book which I think should be a “must” to have.

Great book, though in today's grammatical climate it would be titled “Errol And Myself”.

    Bobby,
Why didn't I think of this myself? You are so clever! High IQ I reckon. UCLA perhaps?? I wrote to David trying to rectify the word “engimatic” to “enigmatic” as it should be but it cannot be done. Accuracy, I know! As I mentioned before, this d*mn keyboard here is playing up. There are so many new words about these days, why not engimatic, sounds good, right?
Still eagerly waiting for the latest news on the Jim Fleming report from you, why does it take so long, I wonder??

Come down a little, please. Why are you attacking a valued member of the blog in such a way? Robert is not obliged to post everything he knows here.

Mr Pratch, I am sure Bob can fight his own battles even verbal ones, but anyway! It it just that I noticed a certain snidy tone in one of his comments about the cigarette case, and your remark was not appreciated either due to personal bad experience. I think they call it “sour grapes” if I am not wrong!), which I think wasn't necessary at all to a fellow blogger.I am stil ltrying to integrate here, let's not forget! Perhaps you didn't read it, I don't know. I thought instinctively (maybe wrongly, not sure as I am only human (no funny remarks here, please!) and certainly not flawless, but there is never any smoke without fire!) that only I know why I wanted to sell without a profit. And if it comes to it, I will even scan in the invoice from 2004 from Fraser's, then it will become crystal clear why I am not even making a dime after 7 years!! I have a few pursuits at the moment on other levels. Normally I don't want to go into these situations as my time is too valuable for backbiting and nasty remarks, but I thought I make an exception here and clear the air between us. Secondly, I am very sorry you were duped once with a similar item, I think I have seen it once and it alerted my sixth sense immediately and it started ringing the alarm bells. Everybody is on the make these days, I know that. Believe you me, we all have reasons to sell…and to buy, I decided to be sensible about it, I had my joy from the item for 7 years and the next person will have the same pleasure, no doubt about that! I think he is a very lucky man indeed.
To cut a long story short, I wish to become a good contributor (and slowly but surely I am getting accepted by some, if not most of you!) to this blog to help us all on the Errol Flynn matter, that is important to me and wish to be part of the Elite Team, so to speak.
So, guys and dolls, I spat it out as I am being challenged here I guess, and let's us all get going with fresh energy creating quality writing here for the benefit of this wonderful blog and David, the initiator. I just wished I had found this blog years ago to be honest.
Let's make peace and please don't let it happen again. I think that says it all. We all need friends in life, not foes. I like to hear from you both and start again on a fresh note. OK??

I was commenting on the book's title, Mr. Vandervliet. Not sure why you took it as something directed at you. For the record: I'm a graduate of The Cooper Union in New York, not UCLA; and numerous other project deadlines preclude a timely answer to the Fleming question. When I get to that part of the research for that book project, this blog will be the first recipient of any discovered information on said gentleman. In the meantime,
    Cheers!

Terry, this comment is identical to one we discussed, isn't it?

Most of you know what sort of friendly, respectful atmosphere we have always maintained on this blog. On other blogs, you will find personal arguments and the sort of back-biting that Jan references in his comments about his reception here on the blog. We don't have that here as a strict rule.
While I respect each person's opinion and feelings I do not tolerate personal attacks from anybody on other members.
We are here to talk about Errol Flynn and share our admiration, curiosity and scholarship, or our pure love of the spirit of the enigmatic creature he was. We need not always praise every aspect of his life. We need not all contribute on the same level of knowledge or insight. We bring whatever we have in our hearts and minds here to share with each other.
Acceptance here is freely given, not something you have to prove to others. If someone misbehaves egregiously, I have ways to deal with it.
We are all human, and naturally, we can get upset and bring out the swordsmanship each of us are capable of when confronted or attacked. My hope has always been to focus on the fun, to keep our aim high, and we have rarely failed to do this!
I was asked by Jan if he could sell his Errol Flynn item here and I alone gave him permission to sell something. I would easily do it again. I have promoted the books and film making efforts of some of our members freely as a way of rewarding them for their loyalty to Flynn's memory and to their support of the blog allowing contact information, prices and pictures to appear in support of this effort. Why would I do less for Jan just because he is relatively new here?
He is so new here that I forgot he was made an Author here in August of 2010. I forgot completely, and didn't notice his name in the admin view of our members! I therefore told him I couldn't change a comment I thought he was referring to on the blog. I can't do this. I can delete, but not edit comments. I can edit posts and so I have now fixed Jan's typo. If we are going to focus on typos and making people afraid to make the slightest error here we have sunk pretty low.
Please go read the Comment Guideline category on the blog. Maybe it needs updating. Maybe I need to remind people of what we have achieved here. Go search the archives and enjoy yourselves.
If you want to pick fights with someone, do it on another blog. That is not and will never be what we are all about on The Errol Flynn Blog…

Robert, it was perfectly clear you were talking about the title.
Jan – you seem to feel people are 'out to get you'… true, there may have been a 'little' skepticism but that is perfectly natural when there are items being sold for large amounts of money. David has put that one to rest now with the opening of the 'promo' section in the files. (Great idea David)
Can we move on from this now? Robert Florczak is a legend in these here parts and anything untoward and uncalled for heading in his direction will certainly not be tolerated.
    best wishes,
    Brian.

    Aw, shucks. Thanks, Sir Brian.
P.S. The only legend in these here parts is Errol Flynn!

I was able to get a copy of the book Errol and Me with great difficulty, but I found it one of the top three or four most insightful books about Errol. It describes the way Errol was behaving at this point in his life, and the ups and downs of their relationship, of course. Nora seemed to genuinely love Flynn her whole life, but made it clear why the marriage became an intolerable agony, to the point of near- suicide.
