Thanks, A.R. Love the photos, and the story. So sad Sean didn’t get more time to make more of a mark in Hollywood. His Dad was obviously very proud of him.
Funny you should mention Hollywood, as Sean hated the place. While preparing for his first starring role he spent about six months there before heading out to Spain where principal photography would be done for “The Son of Captain Blood”. As someone who primarily grew up in Palm Beach, Florida, he felt out of place with the “Hollywood types”.. He preferred Europe, especially Paris where he lived in his maternal grandmother’s apartment between location shooting for his different films and the Riviera, where he played. He starred in eight films of varying quality before heading out for the war. While his performances in these movies vary from wooden to competent., and though he tried his best, he thought of them as mostly a means for making money.
And yes, I am sure Errol was very proud of him.–A. R.
I should add that in his film performances he did excel in at least one aspect, that is in his stunt work. Sean did most of his own stunt work and here he performed like a born athlete. Especially as he shows in his horseback riding and demonstrates in his swordplay in “Duel at the Rio Grande”, in my opinion his best “swashbuckler”!–A. R.
