THE LONDON CHOP HOUSE – WHERE BARRYMORE & FLYNN WHINED & DINED WHEN IN DETROIT
ERROL IS SAID TO HAVE SAT IN A BACK BOOTH, DRINKING MARTINIS, REGALLY SMOKING HIS LONG-FILTERED CIGARETTES, AND REGALING HIS FANS WITH STORIES OF OLD HOLLYWOOD AND HIS ADVENTURES AROUND THE WORLD.
A CARICATURE DRAWING OF HIM ONCE ADORNED THE RESTAURANT.

I have lived in a suburb’s of Detroit all my life and went there once in the late 80’s. I had no idea that he was there and don’t remember those drawings (if they were there then). At one time it was the top place to go in Detroit. At the time I was with a group from work and the service was slow. It looks sweet now but I have not been there.

Very cool that you’ve been there, twinarchers. It was to place to be. I believe Bill Kennedy, who you mentioned once here on the EFB, used to frequent the Chop House, too. I believe I’ve read that the caricatures were auctioned off before or during one of the early renovations. Would love to know where Errol’s is!

Bill Kennedy was a favorite of mine and watched many Flynn films on his show for the first time. He would say before Don Juan started “staring Errol Flynn, before the booze and the broads got to him”. He was a character and used to drink on his show I now believe.

Before you educated me, twinarcher, I only really recalled Bill Kennedy as the great voice on Superman – “Faster than a speeding bullet …” Great information you’ve posted and esearch you’ve inspired, reveal just how big & wonderful an inspiration he himself was to so many people in the Detroit region, including in Canada. There are obviously many well-informed and devoted classic movie fans because of him!
Speaking of Errol’s “broads”, as B.K. called them, I very recently learned that Bill lived only a few houses away from one of them, both in Palm Beach, both very close to Mar-a-Lago. Billy lived on Kings Road, Lilly on Woodbridge – only about a champagne bottle’s throw from each other! … You can see both their homes here, in the shadow of Mar-a-Lago:
