As zacal so timely reminded us in his very cleverly-named “NFL(lynn)” post earlier this evening, today is a big day in the National Football League – first day of the regular season.
This being so, an NFL-related Errol Flynn quiz seems in order.
WHAT MOVIE STAR WE TALKING ABOUT HERE?
1) A double historic connection to the NFL.
2) Dozens of Films.
3) Musician also.
4) A “double” connection to Bette Davis.
5) Closely associated with Errol.
6) A biblical & palodromic first name.
7) Southern & Northern.
8) Middle name means “Ally”.
9) Baseball connection also.
10) Palomino

I think you are looking for Harmon Oscar Nelson Jr.
Bette’s first Husband and childhood friend. They were married in 1932 and for seven years.
About the middle name you say was Ally – is was not – it was his first name. Harmony meaning Ally in Celtic.
Apparently also the “OSCAR” statue was named after him, so Bette claims.

An Award of Merit to you for trying, Tina, but Mr. Davis is not the correct answer.
Here’s another couple of very big clues:

Boy, these quizzes drive me nuts. I recognize Norm Van Brocklin but can’t figure out how he would figure into Errol Flynn or Bette Davis. “Bette Davis Eyes” was 1981 and Brocklin died in 1983. Damn these puzzles!

You’re WAY above average thinking of Van Brocklin, zacal. But that’s not the Norm.

P.S. There’s a pro baseball connection, too!

You’re incredible to recognize No. 11 on an Philadelphia Eagles uniform as the number worn by quarterbacking immortal Norm Van Brocklin. The helmet here obscures, howver, that this No. 11 in the great photo above was actually Rick Arrington, a subsequent Eagles QB, father of sports broadcaster Jill Arrington, and grandfather of Dakota Fanning. Enhancing the sports pedigree further is the fact that Steve Fanning, Dakota’s dad, was a pro baseball player, who used to play for the. Savannah Cards, Arkansas Travelers, St. Pete Cardinals, and the Louisville Redbirds!

And here, zacal, is Dakota’s sesational sports broadcasting Aunt Jill (Arrington), who, I believe, Errol himself would have greatly appreciated, for her exceptional talents, spirit and beauty! (Both Jill and her sisterJoy, Dakota’s Mom, were superb tennis players – thus could have played doubles with Errol!!)

6) A biblical & palodromic first name.
Palodromic is not a word do you mean PALINDROMIC – a name one can read forward and backward like ANNA?

Yes, Tina, that’s correct, my misspelling! (I have a very small cell phone that I do 95% of my posting on, so please forgive my spelling & grammar errors.
And she has a sibling with a palindromic first name, also.

That was a tough one!
Now that we know – but some of your clues are still a mystery to me.
4) A “double” connection to Bette Davis ???
8) Middle name means “Ally”.
In that case “Dakota” is her middle name – how do you get “Ally”
10) Palomino ???
What are the answers to these puzzling clues?
Gentleman Tim

As good as all you guys are, Tina, it’s impossible to be any less cryptic with these clues. I think what made this one most unique is the fact of the Fanning Family’s diverse connections. in both sports and entertainment.
Below is Hannah Dakota with her beautiful gold Palomino, Goldie – named after Goldie Hawn – given to her by Kurt Russell. Dakota means ‘ally or friend’ in the Dakota language. The ” “double” connection to Bette Davis” refers to both of Bette’s eyes!!
After DeNiro (with whom Dakota starred in ‘Hide and Seek”),I was next planning to reference War of the Worlds co-starTom Cruise.

Yes, Tina, it is all pretty amazing, isn’t it. I certainly had no idea avout most of these facts until I started digging for clues to a quiz timed for this weekend’s release if LoRH.
Respecting the Royal relations, there’s actually a double-connection there (too). Most notably perhaps is a relationship to Longshanks & his grandson, King Edward III of England, pictured above. Dakota may not want to advertize that in Scotland! Also, though, there’s a relationship (independent, I believe) to Prince William’s lovely new bride. Kate!

Regarding the initial photos, at top:
Dakota attends college at NYU, pictured along with Wahington Square.
She grew up in Georgia.
The pier and colorful sunset belongs to Hermosa Beach, where Beverly grew up. The image below is a shot of the old Hermosa Beach Biltmore, where Beverly fondly recalled singing “God Bless America”:
