Completing our first A-Z cycle, we visit the Y, commencing with Robert Young & Robert Young.

Yes, two Robert Youngs. First & foremost, Robert Young (no photo posted) the director of the Northhampton Repertory Theater, which proved so pivotal in Errol’s life & career, essentially where he cut his teeth for Hollywood. … Then we have this far more well known Robert Young:

If you ever have time please listen to the Parkinson Interviews (BBC) with David Niven – there is more than one – and he mentions Errol, recounting the story of the lance up the horse’s behind during the filming of the “Charge of the Light Brigade” He loved Errol. What a delightful person he was –

    • David DeWitt

      September 17, 2014 at 9:59 pm

Yes, Niven was great! He and Flynn shared a house rented from Rosalind Russell, I think, during one of Errol’s breakups with La Damita … And Niv always defended Flynn from the Higham charges, as did Mickey Rooney. I wrote Niven twice and received letters from him postmarked from France and Switzerland where he had homes. If you want a great read do read Niv’s The Monn’s a Balloon and Bring on the Empty Horses which has a chapter on Errol.

That is SO cool, David! Letters from Niv himself!! What a good man and friend he was – even after Errol cut his ski line off Catalina!!

I have to listen to those interviews, Maria! Thanks, they sounds great. Good thing it wasn’t Our Man Flynn handling that lance! … If it were, Sickem Higham would have added beastiality to his list of dicko charges against Errol!!

I have been curious about the career of the Chauvels who gave Errol his start. There is a lot of information on the Internet as his films have been recently released in DVD format. What a life! I think it would have been great if Warner’s had lent Errol to do a picture with the Charles Chauvel during those heady days –

What a wonderful, talented and devoted pioneering family, Maria! They gave so much to Australia and the World, including Errol. … What a great idea that is about Errol having worked with the Chauvels again! He could have used you as a friend, producer & promoter!!! Imagine Flynn having done a documentary film or series of films on Down Under and the South Seas . And with Chauvel’s unparalleled team of explorer/filmmakers. WOW! And he could have used the Zaca!

Inspired by The In Crowd video below, I think it would be most cool to inject new “I’m In with the Flynn Crowd” lyrics & images into a new video, retitled, of course, “The Flynn Crowd”.

Hi David- I did read both and just loved them. I am not sure in which one David meets up with Flynn in later years and (if I remember correctly) they just sit quietly in friendship. I could just picture it.

    • David DeWitt

      September 18, 2014 at 9:15 pm

You’re right, I can’t recall which book that meeting is in, either, but it must have been wonderful. I am told Niven used to walk every morning to a small cafe in Gsstaad, and sit having breakfast. If you recognized him, he would invite you to sit with him and talk. If I had known this while he was living I woulkd have moved Heaven and Earth to go there and spend that kind of time with him. One of the best storytellers in the world, can you image?

You know some days I cannot string 2 words together and I am always impressed with how well spoken David , Errol and Olivia were – lovely to listen to. As for Gstaad I would have been right behind you. Our world is so different – who is there today in the entertainment world that you would want to listen to for an hour or so? If I have a chance I am going to look through those books at the library and find the passages.

There’s a couple of J’s in this one – Van Johnson & George Jessel. Van Johnson was a great admirer of Errol and a good guy toward him, I believe. I’m not so sure of Jessel, though he did used to drink with Errol, Barrymore, John Decker, and W.C. Fields (often at the Seven Seas on Hollywood Boulevard.) I think Tom McNulty’s book indicates Flynn hated Jessel. So, maybe Johnson’s in, Jessel’s out! – depending how we decide to identify The Flynn Crowd!

I heard Errol had his bags packed for him and shown the door, but does anybody know why? Did he say “Good Night” to Mrs. Marion Davies? Maybe in his pyjamas from the Copacabana Palace Hotel?

I was up at W.R.’s place last year with my son, citizenheinz. Did some recon on Flynn, of course. It wasn’t in the offcial program or tour, but Errol left quite an impression up on the hill – one that long incensed Citizen Hearst, and is still “whispered” about . He not only “broke every well advertised rule, but apparently also a few Hearst never considered. Adding insult to injury, EF then skipped breakfast! (Then, of course, there was the time him and Niv showed up as circus workers!)

With respect to Marion, I say yes. If not at Cirossis-by-the-Sea, then somewhere. Hopefully not at the San Simeon Zoo!

Remember what Errol said about whispering? Well, per the article below, the tour guides are (fondly) still whispering about him up at Hearst Castle … something I can also personally attest to.

Charlie C., even though the tramp that he was, was much better behaved. On the contrary, Errol`s friend John “Mr. Lamarr” Lodder confesssed in his biography HOLLYWOOD HUSSAR to have gone all the hallway at Hearst Castle.

Though I certainly agree that those are some horrendous mis-matched pajamas on Florence, Tina, they’re not quite as bad as Ex – King Edward’s robe below, are they? And we don’t really have much of a choice, do we? F.A. doesn’t exactly look like Miss California, or even Miss Seal Beach, in your photo either, does she?

Most of all, who am I to take down either of these photos, both of which are legitimate and do each seem to capture aspects of Florence quite well. This is the legacy Ma Aadland left us.

“Last night we attended the horse show at Fort Myer, which was given for the benefit of the Infantile Paralysis Fund. The President seemed to enjoy the jumping, the musical drill done by one of the cavalry troops stationed at Fort Myer, and the artillery drill. My enjoyment is always tempered by a certain amount of fear. People are sure to fall off during the jumping and I am always afraid someone will be seriously hurt. The artillery drill also gives me some moments of apprehension. The musical drill, however, and the class for hack horses, in which Mr. Errol Flynn riding our son, John’s horse, “Badger,” attracted great attention, were pure pleasure.”

That is a “funny” picture of Errol in more ways than one!

1935 Errol looked young and magnificent yet this poster makes him look like around age 45 or so still great but so much older.
Although a great projection into the future but not right for this poster and year the movie was made.

Are you referring to the acquaintance or Dukey’s bathrobe, Tina. If you’re referring to the bathrobe, I certainly agree it was a bit far fetched, to say the least.

I do believe Errol did know Mr. & Mrs. Simpson, having run in the same jet setting circles for many years – in various parts of Europe, the U.S. (e.g. in Palm Beach, Manhattan & California) and the Caribbean, especially Jamaica and the Bahamas, where Ed was demoted to Governor.) Horse races, ski slopes, biggest functions, finest resorts, hotels, nightclubs & restaurants. VERY likely they met. Would be very hard to believe they did not – and especially so with Wallis’s appetite. (And I’m not relying to any extent on alleged meetings in Germany.)

Still, I don’t have any photos though, so, without further research, I can’t be 100% positive, Tina. SO, if you’d like to add an ‘E’ here, please do so!!!

‘X’ for the infamous X-slashing Razor & Woolloomooloo Gangs of 1920’s Sydney, which – most fortunately for fans of Flynn – induced young Errol out of the city’s notorious Dirty Half Mile (near King’s Cross) to the goldfields of New Guinea!

He may well have crossed paths (if not swords)with some of the unsavory and quite dangerous characters depicted below.

We don’t have that show in the States, Lollie. The way Errol described those gangs in His Wicked Wicked Way they must have been terrfying. Said his racetrack buddie Thomson was cut and killed by them, which sent Errol into the swagman caves of Sydney Domain, before heading out to PNG. … Now it looks like the Domain is much more tame!

Here’s some wonderful first-hand info from Gabrielle MacKinnon, daughter of Jim & Gaby MacKinnon, first posted on the EFB in June of 2012:

James (Jim) Mackinnon … was a close friend of Errol’s (…. a great sailor … who designed his yacht Sirocco), a direct neighbor and the main reason why Errol settled in Mallorca (to steer away from his problems with Hollywood). EF, and third wife Patricia Wymore, rented a house in Cas’ Catala called Villa Es Moli (means windmill in Mallorcan). My parents lived right next door in Villa Miguel Angel (they shared the same landlord and connecting wall). My parents, Jim and Gaby Mackinnon, owned a high fashion business called Gaby Couture (in Palma) which employed about 100 people. Gaby had been Miss England, and a house model for Christian Dior (my parents met in Mallorca on vacation and stayed). I have photos of Errol and my father, as joint MC’s for fashion shows at the Fenix Hotel. The Hollywood glam was quite the hit in town, as Pat also modeled for my mom on a couple of occasions. Errol’s daughter Arnella was a couple of years older than me and Errol would send Pepe (I think that was his name) in the Zaca’s dinghy to pick me up every day while my parents were at work. Off on the yacht we’d go, to a beach or cove somewhere; I was often placed in a small O life-ring, on a long rope tied to the side of the yacht (yes, in deep water) to paddle about; that’s probably how I learned the difference between sink and swim. Arnella apparently hit me in the face with a wooden truck and I had two black front teeth untill they fell out. Errol and Jim would organize the wildest parties on the private beach in front of our houses; EF liked to barbecue and would dig a deep hole in the sand, fill it with coals, then palm fronds on top, then place the meat. His secret sauce (I know this all from my mother) was Coca Cola which would caramelize everything. Everyone came in Hawaiian costume (they also had many Spanish friends); there were swimming races in the middle of the night across the cove (with a filled martini glass in hand you were expected to swim a couple of hundred yards in the dark and return with it intact, no spitting seawater allowed), and races on all fours blowing peas with a straw across the sand, along the entire beach. What with the noise and music my mother gave up on trying to get me to bed so apparently they’d let me curl up on a beach towel amongst the party goers. Every afternoon Errol would hang out at the Yacht Club in Palma after mooring the Zaca, join his cronies at the bar for vodka, and it would go from there. He enjoyed dining at a restaurant called El Patio (the most expensive place on the island) and then go next door to Joe’s Bar in Plaza Gomila until the wee hours. Unfortunately, both establishments have since gone to ruin and have been boarded up for years; both houses in Cas’ Catala were demolished in the 80’s in favor of an apartment building. Just before he died in ’59, Errol tried to convince my father to move to Jamaica and run his sugar cane estate in Montego Bay (he feared losing it in court), but my parents weren’t interested in leaving Mallorca, besides they had an ongoing successful business. In the 70’s my mother auctioned off for charity many of Errol’s belongings left to us. I have his gold signet ring with EF’s initials, which I gave to my daughter Alanna, also an actor. After EF’s death Pat Wymore returned to Mallorca on a couple of occasions and stayed in touch. Errol’s daughter Arnella Flynn (with wife Pat) has since passed away after a life long struggle with drugs, and Sean Flynn (son with wife Lilly Damita) whom my parents also met in Mallorca disappeared in Vietnam in the 60’s, as a photographer for the NYTimes. My mother moved on recently and I have a huge bagful of negatives that I have to sort through, so maybe I’ll find some treasures from EF’s days in Mallorca! I do have some other old photos and will post them soon.

    Thank you, Gabrielle!

¡Panama! Senor Flynn greatly enjoyed Panama – not as Geoffrey Thorpe/Sir Francis Drake , but in the real life adventures of Errol Flynn. He began transiting the canal in the 30s, “staying over” repeatedly through the 40’s & 50’s. Errol was even briefly suspected (without any known evidence) that he may have supported anattemped coup against the de la Guardia regime! – along with Margot Fonteyn, who, quite a astonishingly, was most definitely involved!! Since the Dame’s real name was “Peggy” (and because she was SO majestically gorgeous) we’ll include her here, too, as a ‘P’!

FLYNTASTIC, Lollie! Very clever & creative!! Very few people in all of history could cycle through such incredible A-Z arrays of celebrities, characters and circumstances as the Flynnsational Mr. Errol Flynn!

Here’s another Z – the Los Angeles Zoo, the connection of which is so wonderfully depicted in the opening of the treedous film below!

I can’t see any images in the comments section, David. Is it possible to easily recover all of them with a universal action, or (I hope not, of course) will it be necessary to bring each image back one at a time?

The trick is now, Lollie, is that – instead of bracketing the link address like we used to – we now have to download (save) the image first, then “Choose” it to be inserted. … There must now also be text with the image, and nothing appears until it is Submitted. Also, it May now be that only one image can be included with a comment.

Please correct me if and where I’m wrong, David!

Tim, and Lollie! I’ve found an older version of the Add Images plugin! You will see all the missing images have returned. The problem with this plugin is that it uses images hosted on other websites, and if the image is ever taken down on its external host, it will also disappear here. Most people won’t go to the trouble of copying the image and uploading it to our Media Library, first. This means you have to obtain it’s address from our media library and paste it into the embedder. The newer Select an image plugin allows you to upload copies of images from your device, and with text, add them to your comment and automatically to the media library where they are hosted. Not sure about adding multible images – let me look into it! Otherwise, Tim is correct.

Thanks, Tim, I’m at the mercy of WordPress plugins that give us all of our features. I’d like to improve the comment window but the ones I really like don’t work on the blog, or conflict with other plugins. It would be nice to have a toolbar in the comment window but I can’t get a good one to work. New plugins are being developed all the time, though …

In 1952, Errol gave to Griffith Park Zoo for the children of Los Angeles a 7-years-old gbbon from Borneo, which he said reminded him of his days in the jungles of New Guinea. … Perhaps he learned the superb manner of swinging he exhibited in Robin Hood from primates Down Under. … Lord knows he had some primates.

Here’s a gibbon from Borneo employing what appears to be Errol’s famous Robin of Locksley swing technique.

John Warwick/In the Wake of the Bounty:

Without Whom & Which We May Never have Heard of Errol Flynn.

According to premier Flynn researcher John Hammond Moore, Warwick likely discovered Flynn when he (Warwick) was a Cinesound Studios Casting Director/Actor. He reportedly Saw Beach Bathing Flynn at Bondi Beach and reportedly thought “My God! There’s Fletcher Christian!”

John Warwick can be seen playing Errol’s distant mutineer-cousin, Edward Young, with his later-famous discovery at 24:25 – 25:17 & 40:16 – 41:19 in the following In the Wake of the Bounty video:

    www.youtube.com…

He promptly contacted Charles Chauvel and they met Flynn at the Long Bar of the Australia Hotel – Australia’s most renowned hotel, the “Hotel of the Commonwealth”. Here it is, once the tallest building in Australia:

VERA GIBLIN! (and her husband, William Eric Giblin, M.D.)

(Veronica Maria) Vera (nee Walsh) Giblin

Errol’s early 1930s surrogate Mom, benefactor, goldfield lottery cowinner & partner, and “staunch defender”. She was so important in Errol’s life that he wrote her repeatedly during his early Hollywood days to thank her for all she had done for him (sometimes with Lili, too) , once summing it up with this:

“You’ve done more for me than anybody on this earth!”

The Giblins were a prominent family*. Dr. Giblin helped Errol significantly. Here’s a record of his original appointment as “Government Medical Officer for the Territory”, stationed at Lakekamu Goldfield. See page 101, at bottom right.

    books.google.com…

And here’s a more comprehensive history, including evidence that the Giblin Family may have Errol’s Down Under furniture!

    books.google.com…

Here’s a copy of Dr. Giblin’s World War I’s Service Record, issued while he was living in Port Moresby:

    * I believe that the Giblins may have been related to the very prominent Giblin Family of Tasmania (including Lyndhurst Giblin, who helped Professor Flynn in his career), but I have not yet confirmed that.

    Ken Hunter-Kerr

Errol’s friend in Sydney, who helped him find work and entrée into upper strata social circles, including with the Dibbs sisters.

    books.google.com…

Old Dalgety Wharf, very near where Errol worked for Dalgety & Co., one of the most prominent employers in all of Australia. “Huge lorries” would deliver wool “all day and night” to ships for delivery around the world. Ken Hunter-Kerr helped 17-year-old Errol get a job as a clerk in the “Wharf and Stevedoring Department”.

Here’s some wonderful first hand information from Jim & Gaby MacKinnon’s daughter, Gabrielle MacKinnon! – first posted by Gabrielle on the EFB in June of 2012:

James (Jim) Mackinnon … was a close friend of Errol’s (had designed his yacht Sirocco), a direct neighbor and the main reason why Errol settled in Mallorca (to steer away from his problems with Hollywood).

    Gene Kelly

Errol’s buddy in London and later the person who is said to have inadvertently made the meeting and matching of Errol and Woodsie via the inclusion of sexy young Beverly in Marjorie Morningstar. … As seen in the video linked below, Kelly also used some of Errol’s swaggering and swashbuckling moves in his MGM movies. He was not Errol Flynn, but he was a fine and fun swashbuckler nonetheless.

His Father, Les Norman, was also a very notable Tasmanian historian and author, who wrote a great deal about nautical subjects and history. I suspect but don’t know that Errol must have known that at some point. If so, I believe that would have impressed him greatly.

Errol would sometimes visit the homes of officers on Coronado. This Coronado cottage below belonged to one of the most famous aviation families of all time, the Mustins. A very inside story, never published before, is that Errol played “Sardines” at this Mustin Family home in the early Forties, stunning all the officers and their families by somehow amazingly and successfully hiding on a living room mantelpiece.

Gorgeous Dolores eventually took Errol & Lili to see the not-so-gorgeous Diego Rivera, and his erotically exotic wife, Frida. Diego, in turn, eventually took Errol to his patio to peek at the Pyramids & Popocatepetl, debate William Prescott … and then to puff on some apparently very powerful pot, after which they Errol listened to some of DR and/or FK’s pot-inspired paintings sing, perhaps even the pop-eyed self-portrait below:
