I always thought they met on the ship that brought Flynn from England to the U.S.A.

Going by early publicity and Errol’s account about seeing Lili on his first visit to America in 1935, one would most certainly be led to believe so, daringthorpe. Lili., however, is reported to have said otherwise, claiming they first met in the City of Paris in 1933. There is also a claim, I believe, that Errol met Lili in London, in 1934.

I haven’t read original sources for the 1933 and 1934 claims, so am in a very poor position to evaluate their credibility. Upon close examination, what Errol actually wrote in MWWW may not technically conflict with either the 1933 or 1934 accounts. Though he may well intentionally lead readers to conclude that this was the first time he saw and met Lili, I don’t believe he ever literally states that. He does say he saw her walking arrogantly aboard ship, and later walked up to her and asked her to dance, but I don’t believe he said in MWWW it was the FIRST time he saw or met her. Please correct me if I’m wrong!!!

Similar, perhaps, in this much earlier account, where the word “met” is used rather than “first met”.

Per Gerry Connelly, author of Errol Flynn in Northhampton, Errol first met Lili in Paris, not on the Paris.

I just presumed they met on the ship and I am not going to disagree with you, but it does seem likely they met before they boarded that ship. I am thinking she, Lili must have been a fascinating creature to hold Flynn’s attention for so long. Thanks for the post

Thank you, daringthorpe. Fascinating, indeed, and off-the-charts sexy, from what everyone who knew her said.

Just to be clear, I don’t know the answer to this mystery, nor do I hold any position. I’m just inquiring and seeking more informed accounts and opinions from others!
