p.s. if Cabot was the Best Man, who could possibly be the Worst Man.

Great, very interesting find, Maria. Thank you.

Betsy Bloomingdale on our left, Carol Marcus (Grace) on our right. Errol in the middle, looking very well behaved. That’s a pretty long train G.V.’s got there, even for a Vanderbilt, isn’t it?

Carol Marcus, ultimately Carol Matthau, was the inspiration for Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Perennially Best-Dressed Betsy Bloomingdale was married to the notorious Authur.

Well I guess this may have been THE wedding of the year –

I am still trying to figure out why Errol would have been in the wedding party? Just how close was he to the Bride and Groom? I found lots of references that they dated when she was in Hollywood – but she also dated Bruce Cabot, Marlon Brando etc.

If Gloria was not Amelia – was it Pat Di Cicco who was the connection? In trying to find out some more information I see that Pat was referred to as a “gangster” a few times, implicated in a murder (altho I also saw some serious rebuttals of that one) – Bruce Cabot seemed to be the common element. Some time ago Gloria was a guest on Anderson Cooper’s talk show and I have copied part of their conversation here:

“Cooper recounted how his mother had asked him to proof-read a romance memoir she had written. ‘I was like, “really?” So I did and it was funny because I used to watch old movies with my mom when I was a kid. ‘And you know Frank Sinatra would be in some movie and I’d turn and say “did you know Frank Sinatra?” And she’d look at me and be like “Oh yes”.’

So I suppose it could be very possible everyone in that crowd would know everyone else. It just seems to me that being in someone’s wedding party is very personal. On the Late Show (in 2014) Anderson Cooper “listed actors Clark Gable and Errol Flynn as some of his mother’s other lovers”. I guess my next stop will be the local library to pick up her memoirs! I think this last comment sums up BOTH Errol and Gloria on the concern of friends when the memoir was about to be published:

“I did have two friends who were very Waspy, even more Waspy than I am — because I don’t consider myself Waspy — that were really concerned,” said Vanderbilt, and they said this book is going to ruin your reputation — so I refrained myself from saying, ‘Oh, goody!'”

Perhaps just another good friendship between 2 nice people!

All great points and thoughts, Maria. You’ve definitely brought some new, fascinating Flynnmates onto the blog and into the discussion! Thanks!!

I wouldn’t be surprised in the least to learn that Gloria is the long undiscovered Amelia (no, not that long undiscovered Amelia)

I wonder if the River Queen cruise was circa his post-exoneration trip with Buster Wiles to New Orleans, Maria?

Well I picked up Gloria’s book “Black Knight White Knight” in order to try an find out more about her and Errol’s relationship. Apart from him calling her several times to ask her out (and her telling her butler to tell him she had gone out) there is not much. However, As she was planning her wedding to Pat di Cicco she mentions having problems with her bridesmaids. I copy from her letter to Carol Marcus : Charley Wrightsman is just nuts about her (Shirley Cowan), really crazy, and she goes out with him, but only when she can’t go out with -guess who? Errol Flynn!! I think we have posted photos of them together. Gloria goes on to mention that Errol will be an usher – so I guess they were all quite friendly. It is the next part that was interesting – she goes on.”The Deenie Hutton situation , for example. Errol met her on a train going somewhere and went coo-coo over her ” Errol wanted Gloria to invite Deenie to be a bridesmaid -she refused as Gloria knew she would -as they were never that close. ‘Deenie” is Dina Merrill! Hmmmmm.. seems to fit the bill -do you think she was Amelia?

Superb research, Maria! You may have solved the mystery. That could have made Errol cousins with Cary.

            Here’s Errol & Shirley:

What a small town Unhollywood was in that days. And an underworld, too. Pat the C(h)icco was the cousin of James Bond producer Cubby Broccoli, Lucky Luciano`s henchman and Thelma Todd`s Ex (-ec!?). On the other hand Charly Wrightsman was Freddie McEvoy`s ungracious father- in-law and as we learned here Errol`s unchivalric rival in love…
