Mailbag! Errol Flynn & Cary Grant!

31 Mar

Our Mailbag brings a tough question from Jolene, can anybody help her with an answer?

Hi there at The Errol Flynn Blog! I enjoy y’alls blog very much and I was curious. Is there any picture of Errol Flynn and Cary Grant together? An odd question I know but they are my two favorite people/actors so I was just curious. I haven’t found one yet so I thought to ask the great Errol Flynn Blog!

Thanks so much,

Jolene

    Excellent question, Jolene. I don’t recall ever seeing one. They are a microsecond apart from each other in this, however – between 4:28 and 4:29:

    TCM had a show on with Ken Murray, I think it was “HOLLYWOOD WITH OUT MAKE UP”, where he showed a lot of his home movies, and some borrowed from others, Cary Grant was one of them, at one of Cary’s party’s he had movies of Errol playing tennis; I don’t know if there were stills from those parties. Errol and Cary were friends enough that he was invited to his parties.

    Hi Jolene;
    Thanks for liking our blog, it sure is a great one and maybe you should join us? Would be great!

    I don’t think Cary and Errol were really friend-friends, but definitely knew each other. I also think that Errol wasn’t close to any of big male stars of his era. Just a feeling?!?

    Here are two pictures I have, hope that helps?

          Awesome, Tina! That second photo looks like that might have been taken somewhere around the time of The Amazing Adventure, circa 1936/7 perhaps, starring Mary Brian & Cary Grant. The first photo has Gloria Vanderbilt between Cary & Cabot, of course.

            Tim, you sure that`s Gloria in between Cary Grant and Bad Company? Or is it Mary Brian all over again…

        No problema, Tina. I’m just amazed and appreciative that you found and posted this photo of Errol and Grant. I don’t recall ever seeing it. Thank you!

        P.S. I knew the one wasn’t of Flynn, because, if it was, Miss Vanderbilt would have been looking in the opposite direction!

      Hi Ti, wie geht’s?
      Well Errol the leading male had many buddies, like Alan Hale, Big Boy Guinn, Mickey Rooney…He went on dinner double dates with Tyrone Power, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor and Kirk Douglas. He was friendly but not close with the likes of Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Stewart. He befriended his personal Bud Ernst, Ronny Shedlo and Barry Mahon. He roamed the realms of the Olympiads, an exclusive round of famous drunkards named Barrymore Decker & Co.He cruised with Bogie, shared a seaside villa with David Niven and snowpaled with Johnnie Weissmüller. But the company he was seeking and thriving on were real life rogues like Cabot and Freddie McEvoy

      Hi Jo_Zaca;
      Yes it is a shame that the picture is of bad quality. I don’t think there are pictures of Cary and Errol at least any others I ever could find, hence my feeling that there was not a real friendship, meaning hanging out with each other.
      Sorry about the other picture it’s Bruce Cabot.
      Take care!

        Hi you can call me Jo or Jolene! Thanks for posting the picture! Even though it’s a bad quality I’m glad it exists :P
        No I don’t believe there was a friendship but I was hoping there would be atleast one picture of them together and there was!
        I didn’t think it was Errol but it’s a great picture nonetheless.

    Errol and Cary would have been a great team if Yoko hadn’t ruined everything.
