This wonderful photo is thought to be Errol, Rory & Dierdre at the glorious Nautilus Resort in Miami Beach, but I’m not certain. Errol used to sail up to and stay at the Nautilus, repeatedly in the Zaca, and possibly once in the Sirocco, too, on its maiden voyage from Boston to LA. I believe this may have been taken by the wall to the side of the resort’s famous pool, with Nora nearby. I visited this location yesterday, on the site of what is now Miami’s Mt. Sinai Hospital. The setting is magnificent. Anyone know for sure if this is or is not “Errol Flynn and his daughters” at the Nautilus.

The Nautilus was renowned for it majestic architecture, huge acreage and waterfront, preeminent pool and polo fields, private docks and bath houses, and two beautiful islands in a premier tropical setting on Miami Beach setting facing downtown Miami. It’s now all been replaced by Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Another one of my favorites! Were the girls friends of the family? Just delightful!

It’s almost certainly connected to the story in this article, Maria. Perhaps they’re random girls rounded up by the photographer.
My initial belief was that it was the girls in this article (which I’ve published elsewhere on the blog before), but the site I found this weekend, now apparently taken down, specifically reported that they were Errol and Nora’s daughters at the Nautilus. Being there was a resemblance, I imagine this perhaps is how the misidentification took place. Anyhow, always best to have the truth.

I was thinking how relaxed that photo is – which is why I thought the 2 little ones were well know to Errol -although he was so charming that they may have felt quite comfortable with him!

Hi Delvan:
Just curious, from where do you have this information that the girls are Leslie Rae Singer and Pamela Brown?
If so, whose children are they? Would be great to know?
Take care!

Do you have any information on the second half of Tina’s question, Delvan, i.e., whose children are they?

Hi Tina. I imagine the names of the girls may have been included by Miami Beach hotel publicist Mori Fremon with her wire photo to the New York Daily News, which published the photo. I am not aware of any free or publicly accessible archives for the DN, however, or I would have checked.
When I can, I’m going to check things out further and see what I can find on library newspaper and genealogy databases about the photo, Leslie Rae Singer and Pamela Brown. If the photo had been taken in Palm Beach, rather than Miami Beach, I would have been inclined to think the famous Singer family of Singer Island fame was involved. That would have sewed things up for us, but as the Nautilus was an renowned international tourist resort, the girls could well be from anywhere – from Miami to Mozambique.

Thanks Tim!
I just can’t believe that it is not Rory and Dierdre in particular as the age of the children is just right too. In 1952 Rory was 5 and Dierdre was 7 years old, which fits the children in the picture extremely well and the standing child looks a lot like Dierdre.
What ever the case it sure is a great puzzle! Hope you find the answer, I tried but could find nothing,
Take care!

Here Tim is Dierdre not quite 5 years old, taken on the set of Montana which was released January 1950 at which time she would have been full 5 years old.
I don’t have any pictures of her around 7 years of age, but the resemblance is stunning to the girl in the picture if it is not Dierdre.

I cropped the heads of the girls and here are the comparisons. Now, what do you think Tim and all my other fellow authors?

Excellent work, Tina. Striking similarities indeed, especially so for “Deirdre” perhaps. The eBay photo/ link I found with Rory & Deirdre’s names specifcally id’ed appears to have diappeared within hours of my post.
No success yet getting to a database with these other names. Even if they are Americans, their ages put them beyond the 1940 census, the last available to me. Maybe there are some SSN or obit records, but they could be living, but using different last names. Wouldnt it be great to speak with them!
Delvan probably has some inside info abd will get back, but needs more time to see, research and respond to your inquiries.
