Alan Hale earned a very distinguished place in film history as Errol’s great cinematic “sidekick”, most notably fighting along side his real-life buddy Flynn in swashbucklers, westerns, and other action movies. That known, in what film or films, if any, was Alan an adversary of Errol??*
*Excepting his initial opposition against Errol as Little John, of course.

Years ago I attended a screening of “Adventures of Don Juan” with Vincent Sherman also in attendance. I met the actress who had the line “Is it true that you swam the Bosphorus
to visit the caliph’s daughter?” She said Flynn was quiet and “a real gentleman” but was still angry with Alan Hale,(though she was laughing at the memory) saying that right before every take he would whisper her line inverted to try and trip her up, something like “Is it true that you fwam the Cosphorus to swim the Baliph’s daughter?”

That is so funny, zacal. And so cool you were there for that!
With all the bogus Court actions and appearances Errol was facing in those days, one of the last things he would have wanted to hear may have been that “he swam the Bailiff’s daughter”!

Slightly OT, as Hale and Flynn are on the same side in it, but I just watched DESPERATE JOURNEY (it was Raymond Massey day on TCM). I’d never seen it before, but you could just tell they got along so well.

As I understand, there is no biography on Little Big John, but are there any anecdotes out there somewhere, from
Hale hailing Errol? Maybe told by Alan Hale Jr. ?
