DVD of ‘The Adventures Of Captain Fabian’ si flawless and pristine!

08 Sep

Kino Lorber in cooperation with Republic Pictures has released a beautiful-looking DVD of one of Errol Flynn’s most forgotten and obscure films ‘The Adventures Of Captain Fabian’ (1951). There is not a single flaw in the 35MM negative and the film itself holds up splendid. Mind you the real stars of the film are Micheline Presle and Vincent Price who give top-notch performances in this dark, Gothic tale. Errol Flynn and the always wonderful Agnes Moorehead are clearly in support. Flynn, with top billing, is ideally cast as the dashing, heroic Captain Fabian who single-handily brings down 1860’s New Orleans most corrupt and power hungry dynasty. The woman in question is no good but Fabian fights for her honor and love to no avail. The film ends with a rousing attack on police headquarters by a mob led by Vincent Price to lynch Captain Fabian. The intrepid Captain is rescued by his crew in time to battle the sneering villain to the death. The woman dies tragically and a broken-hearted Captain Fabian gently carries her body down the long New Orleans dock. Errol Flynn looks fit as a fiddle and sports impressive biceps which make his fight scenes with the equally tall Price realistic. Enjoy this forgotten gem! Ralph Schiller

What Musical Composition?

08 Sep

What musical composition from one of Errol’s greatest films was used very prominently in other top films?

Garry Owen 20060207-1~2

1) Beethoven had previously performed the composition.

2) Used in the films of other cinematic legends.

3) Most notably in films featuring megastar contemporaries of Errol’s.

4) By multiple studios.

5) Used previously to Errol’s film, in a very popular movie, with a Golden Age immortal.

6) Used in several major films subsequent to Errol’s.

7) Also notably used in a movie subsequent to Errol’s, starring a contemporary Hollywood superstar, in a film regarded by many as one of the greatest movies ever made.

The Sea Sparrow

depp

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

Cap Depp has been showing signs of fondness for our Hollywood hero at the film festival of Venice. Not only was he wearing Errol of ol` style shoes on the red carpet while promoting his newest film “Black Mass”, but his antics at the press conference reminded of Flynn as well. When bored at public gatherings Errol would resort to his flask and immerse himself in a high proof cup of tea. See: www.theerrolflynnblog.com…

Johnny upped the ante and drank straight from a bottle claiming it to be a non alcoholic beverage. The role of real life Irish gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, who collaborated with the FBI against the Italian Mob, while building a criminal empire of his own, could net him an Oscar nomination. He probably drank to that.

Here is what he had to say about the controversial character he playes: “You have to approach him as a human. No one wakes up in the morning and says, as they are brushing their teeth, I am going to do something evil today…I found the evil in myself a long time ago, I accepted it- we are old friends…when ordered by authorities to remove my dogs from Australian soil, I killed them and ate them, for these were the direct orders of a sweaty, big gutted man (reference to the minister of agriculture, who said that Depp`s two Yorkshire Terriers should “bugger” back to the United States).

When asked about the inspirations for his transformations on screen he mentioned John Barrymore, Marlon Brando and Lon Chaney Sr. as rolemodels. Errol Flynn looms large in Johnny`s private life again, since his new wife, Amber Heard, is 23 years younger than the 52 year old actor.

For he`s a Jolly Roger good fellow, Captain Sparrow will set sails for a fifth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean”- franchise scheduled for 2017. Don`t expect non alcoholic beverages at that one. Enjoy,

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

here is a nice little vid showing a trip into La-La Hollywoodland.

One can see how Errol was living off his looks and wit and loving every minute of it.

Enjoy,

Five Came back – a story of Hollywood and the 2nd World War

02 Sep

I picked up this book to read during my Muskoka vacation in August.  It is by Mark Harris writing about the movies made during the war  by the big 5 directors of the time  (Capra, Huston, Walsh, Wyler and Ford) and how, once war was declared in 1941, their mission went from entertaining to producing `propaganda`movies for public consumption.  Of course there is a brief mention of “Operation Burma` and an interesting line or two-

Did you know that during the scene where the soldiers come upon the mutilated corpses of their comrades, the original script had Errol saying -`There`s nothing especially Japanese about this.. you`ll find it wherever you find Fascists. There are even people who call themselves American who`d do it too“The line was cut as anti Japanese language was preferred.  It is an odd sentence to have in a movie about war.

Somehow I can see Errol saying that. I wonder what he thought of the line being cut.
