“The Most Celebrated Sex Symbol Since Errol Flynn”

16 Dec

In the early Seventies, a famous, Pulitzer-Prize winning writer declared him the most celebrated sex symbol since Errol Flynn.

Who was he?

He was a GREAT athlete.

He died in the late Eighties.

He was very famous very young.

A major movie was made about him.

The woman closest to him died this year.

People paid huge sums for him to be a sexual partner.

Like Flynn himself (and the aforementioned Pulitzer- Prize writer), he is still regarded by many to be the best in the world at what he did.

    He had red hair.

He was born and raised in America.

The writer was known for red hair, too.

Though he couldn’t play tennis nor cricket, nor box as well as Errol, he was an even greater athlete – one of the greatest.

    He was born in Virginia.

He died at only nineteen years old.

He very famously broke a world record.

Most people recall him wearing blue and white.

He was only about 5’6″, but weighed much more than Errol.

His father was famous, too – and in the same profession.

Errol would have certainly known of his father, and almost certainly seen his father on TV circa 1957.

He had some of the most expensive hair in the world.

His father, who was VERY successful with the females, can be spotted in this video. (No, it is not Hoover nor Nixon!)

There are multiple statutes built in tribute to him. Ones in New York and elsewhere.

    It is not John Malkovich.

This is a conundrum indeed, GT. I figure it’s a baseball player for the Yankees or Dodgers, that’s all I got. The father/son thing is throwing me.

Good try, Paula. Not a Yankee or Dodger, but he did become immortally famous in an outdoor sporting venue in the Big Apple.

Red Smith for the New York Times
    October 31, 1973

“The sporting world’s Great Lover‐Elect, Secretariat, makes his final New York appearance next Tuesday when he parades before an Election Day crowd after the third race at Aqueduct with Ron Turcotte in the saddle wearing the blue and white blocks of Meadow Stable. The New York Racing Association, whose leaders have the respect for money that you would expect of people named Vanderbilt, Whitney, Phipps and Mellon, are laying plans for farewell ceremonies benefitting a 3‐year‐old who has amassed $7,396,808 in approximately 15 months. (Only $1,316,808 was earned by the sweat of of his face; you might call the other $6,080,000 ancillary income.) Soon after The Times the valedictory, probably within a week, the colt will be flown to Kentucky assume his role as the most celebrated sex symbol since Errol Flynn, or anyway Joe Namath.”

Here he is winning the Triple Crown at Belmont Park, by 31 lengths, in what’s still a world record time.
