Dear fellow Flynn fans,
whoever said that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder may well have been a caricaturist. Those acerbic artists have a keen mean eye for the special facial features of a person. Especially Errol deemed handsome if not downright beautiful enticed them to sharpen their pencils another notch. The image above shows our Hollywood hero as seen and drawn by Adrian Teal. By no means an ugly inkling, don’t you think?
Enjoy,

Well, well, Herr Heinz, it looks to me like Mr. Teal struck out this time at bat. Perhaps he sipped a bit too much gin on Gin Lane before he ginned this one up. Excepting the ascot, sweater, and pencil thin, I see this caricature as more Error than Errol. His Gin Lane Gazette has much better work in it.

C’mon Torridman Tim, that dispicture isn’t that bad. The worst is yet to come. For example this spitting image of Errol looks like he auditioned for the Hunchback of Notre Dame with his visage only!

Right on Ryder O’ Tymes! Flynn a punchdrunk Dumbo? We are not amused…and so seems the Errol up here.

These cartoons are terrible. It really takes effort to botch up Errol’s looks. Just sayin’!

Agreed Genene. Most cartoons look like Flynn worked for Hammer Studios. Still you could trade three Boris Karloffs for one Bela Erroli.

Despicable, heinz! What’s with these sickos!
Art skills aside, their knowledge of biology is also in question. For example, check out those anatomically misplaced chins.

Flynn took the snyde in stride though, Unionman Tim. Look at this Despicable E., which was on permanent display at the Waldorf Hotel and was even signed by our Hollywood hero. One wonders what they did in their famous salad there…

I just don’t know, heinzster. As hideous as others were, one could see it was Flynn being defaced. Even that Errolphant Man image had recognizable traces of Flynn. This one, however, is another story. To me, it doesn’t exhibit any of Flynn’s spirit or character whatsoever, and nearly nil of his physical features.
If this caraciture did hang in the Waldorf Astoria bar in Beverly Hills, where, the sellers say Errol also used to hang, then the artist and hotel manager should also be hung. I’d be glad to bring the rope, except that I can’t find any record of any Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills during Errol’s lifetime. Does anyone out there in Flynnland know where it was?
If Errol did indeed sign this, he must have got a lot of free drinks and stays to do so!

The Errolphant phrase gave me a good laugh, Barman Tim. It is out of the Cecil Jones Hollywood Collection. I can only guess it maybe was on display in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York? The originator for sure was under the influence of a full moon.

In the words of the great Billy Shakespeare (or perhaps the colicky Colley Cibber):
“Off with Their Heads! Off with Their Heads!”
Oscar of Waldorf fame would be appalled. Even his Eggs Benedict were given more artistic care and better presentation than what these carnivorous caricaturists gave the The Baron of Mulholland! May all of them be forever banished to the most barren of all the Thousand Islands.
As depicted below, Errol would have come in with both guns a blazin’ – except he would have been lookin’ like Flynn, and with a PYT on each arm.

Possibly drawn by a caricaturist on the spot at his Ringley Bros. visit with Beverly and a friend?
