The Big Boodle! In Hell Hot Havana!

14 Aug

[embedyt] www.youtube.com…

1957 Crime drama noir style film starring Errol Flynn, Pedro Armendáriz, Rossana Rory, and Gia Scala, set and filmed on location in Cuba. Once Errol’s grittier performances, at times a bit disjointed, in his reactions, is nonetheless fascinating for its locale. Flynn spent a lot of time in Cuba and some of it is controversial. Here are a few shots towards the ending of the film filmed on the famous El Morro Castle. And a shot of this location as it today, in 2018.

The shots above were made at this location and below we see the same location as it looks today in 2018.

Sex in the South Seas — Cinema & Symposiums

09 Aug

“The Biggest Tiki Party on the Planet”

With a discussion of In the Wake of the Bounty, and other Bounty films, et al.

Beginning today in San Diego

Friday 11:30am-12:30: Sex in South Seas Cinema

Ed Rampell is an L.A.-based full-time freelance writer and author. In this titillating symposium, Rampell will expose everything you ever wanted to know about Sex in South Seas Cinema. The film genre that offers the allure of South Seas sirens, naked nymphs, bronzed gods and goddesses, sensual dance and the first Western-style kiss on the lips.

Definition of the South Seas Cinema Genre:

[T]he element that distinguishes South Seas Cinema is its depiction of paradise on earth.

[T]he silent films “Tabu” and “Moana of the South Seas” as early examples of the genre. He will be discussing all four of the “Mutiny on the Bounty” films in his Friday Tiki Oasis Symposium: the Clark Gable 1935 film, Marlon Brando’s 1962 one, the more recent Mel Gibson 1984 adaptation as well as the lesser known Errol Flynn film “In the Wake of the Bounty.”

No question why Errol’s film qualified for the festival, just look at the “Otahiti” scenes from about 10:45 to 20:15!

Errol Flynn’s Ship Model

06 Aug

To all Flynn aficionados out there, I’m looking for the name of this ship, that was in Errol’s den.  I think it was a Dutch man of war, but I don’t know.  I have seen many ships on the internet and on many ship model makers that are very similar but it isn’t this exact ship.

I also think that this ship model could be one of the smaller models used in Captain Blood and the model dept at Warners could have given this to Flynn as a gift.  They must have copied it from photos of a real ship that had a name to it.

I have a close-up view of this ship but for some reason, I can’t post it in my post here.  I’m looking to have a replica made of this ship for my home office.  Any help in finding this ship or the name would be an awesome help to me.  I’m calling on Gentleman Tim who can find just about anything on Flynn…

Best wishes to you all

A Sunday Quiz

05 Aug

During his “college” days in London, Errol used to salivate on Sundays for this weekly treat.

Clues:

– He first took a very long walk in formal clothing.

– Before eating he used to mumble a little Latin.

– Evidence is very spotty but the name of this quiz dish may derive from the beloved breed depicted below.

Titchfield Hotel Menu circa 1959

01 Aug

I am fascinated by the old Titchfield Hotel when Errol owned it. We know it has long since gone into history but my late friend Dennis Mullen was able to get onto the restricted grounds where the hotel stood by charming a soldier there at the military training grounds the area subsequently became with a few cocktails they might drink together on what remained of the hotel and pools, and toast Flynn. Dale Westin, who was then manager of the Errol Flynn Marina had told him access to the site was impossible but Dale did not reckon with Dennis’s wit and guile and sheer Flynn style wicked ways …

Dennis Mullen at the Titchfield swim up bar, the first of its kind.

Titchfield Pool Remains

Dennis and his new soldier pal sat in what they figured was the same spot as Errol and Earl Conrad and drank to Flynn and our blog, he told me. So over the years, after Dennis passed away far, far too soon, the hotel still fascinates me and I look here and there for any tidbit about it I can find. Occasionally, I find a postcard. Or two.

And if lucky find an item I have not seen before. Here is something in that happy category: an eBay item featuring a menu from the hotel that looks like simple dinner fare …

A bit hard to read but the seller provides a date:

One page with cover on one side and dinner menu on backside. Dinner menu is dated 13th Aug. 1959. Does not have prices.
