Google comes to the rescue again. Searching “sphinx” and “paris” comes up with this blurb from Wikipedia: Le Sphinx was a maison close (brothel) in Paris in the 1930s and 1940s. Along with the “Le Chabanais” and “One-Two-Two” it was considered one of the most luxurious and famous Parisian brothels.
Here’s the splendide (that’s French for splendid – the French have a word for everything) story of The Sphinx. This is R-rated, however, so viewer discretion is advised!!!
Of course, Errol was probably only selflessly doing research for Warners, so as to best understand his roles – a very serious job he did not take lying down.
