TANDA SS was a British Cargo Steamer of 7,174 tons built in 1914 by Alexander Stephen & Sons, Glasgow, Yard No 458 for the British India Steam Navigation Company, Glasgow & London as the Madras SS. In 1920 she was renamed TANDA SS. In 1924 she was purchased by the Eastern & Australian SS Co. She was powered by a Twin screw 2 x T. 3cyl 5200ihp giving 14 knots. Engines by Shipbuilder. She served as a Hospital Ship and ambulance transport from 1914 to 1919. On the 15th July 1944 when on route from Melbourne via Colombo for Bombay she was torpedoed by German submarine U-181 and sunk. 19 persons lost from a total of 216. Thank Goodness Chuckie Highham didn’t discover that this ship Errol was upset with was later torpedoed by a German U-boat, David!
