You are too diabolical, Tim. At first I thought that maybe the second event had to do with a legacy he didn’t want, i.e., the reputation of In Like Flynn, and I wondered if he purchased the Sirocco in 1938. But your other clues don’t match that at all. Then I recalled that Flynn said his issue of LIFE was buried in a time capsule, but I don’t know what 5K (or 5,000?) and the photos have to do with that. That’s as far as my brain gets.

You are too dang good, barb – requiring my quizzes and clues to get more and more “diabolical”!

Errol states in MWWW that the World’s Fair time capsule would be dug up in a thousand years, but, in actuality, it was planned to be 5000 years. Hence the 5K clue.

The second clue is the most diabolical of all because Errol did not know or mention is that the May 23, 1938 LIFE Magazine was put into the time capsule in the form of microfilm. The second clue is a photo of a 1937 microfilm machine, rare in those days.

The third clue is a photo of the actual time capsule.

The fourth clue is a photo of people preparing part of the shaft into which the time capsule was ultimately inserted.

The fifth clue is the iconic 1939 World’s Fair pylon and sphere. Many New Yawkers called it the “ball and spike”. The Fair opened on the 150th anniversary of George Washington’s presidency, hence G.W. in the foreground.

        Forgot to say:

“The Time Capsule was lowered at noon on September 23, 1938, the precise moment of the Autumnal Equinox.”

Wow. You’ve outdone yourself, Tim. Fascinating stuff. I didn’t know microfilm even existed back then. You’re the master detective to find these factoids!

Thank you for the compliment Barb, but I learn many if not most of the facts in my quizzes only after I begin researching and preparing the quiz. For example, though I’ve worked with microfilm quite a bit, I was surprised to learn it existed in 1938. Frankly, I couldn’ figure out most of my own “diabolical” clues. Your ability to do so is spectacular, often astonishing. Thanks for making it so much fun to post these quizzes, barb.

P.S. I sure hope you’re going to join us Flynnmates in toasting Errol on his 111th (and Olivia’s 104th 11 days later.)

Believe me, Tim, without your additional clues for your quizzes, I’d get nowhere. And, of course, there’s that little thing called Google that helps just a bit.

And of course I’ll raise a toast (or two)!
