Errol referenced Fidler’s 1941 Senate Motion Picture Hesrings testimony in the U.S. Senate accusing Hollywood studio moguls of making warmongering movies designed to manipulate America into joining the war in Europe. (All academic after Pearl Harbor.) That may be partially true, but Errol was likely far more motivated to punish the crabby Fidler because of disparaging false claims the gossip columnist made against Errol in connection to Arno’s drowning two months earlier. David Niven wrote the following in The Moon’s a Balloon on this topic:
“Errol Flynn met his match once. His dog Arno fell overboard and drowned, and a particularly nauseating gossip columnist called Jimmy Fidler wrote a snide piece about Flynn failing to rescue his dog. When he found him sitting with his wife in a nightclub on the Strip, Flynn flattened him with a single punch. Mrs Fidler, however, stuck a fork in Flynn’s ear and they both took him to court for assault.”
I can’t see Errol hittin’ the Missus for forking him, Cat, but I surely would have cheered him on for slapping around her gossipmonger husband. Any man who becomes gossip columnist should expect to be slapped around.
