Very interesting and insightful. Rory reminds us that, despite the larger than life persona and often tall-tales, he was a husband, father, book author and screen writer, animal lover, sailing expert, and perhaps the most underrated actor of any era in movie history. No one has ever replaced him.
I think libel published about him in 1981 really has been debunked so much, no one takes it seriously as more. There might be several reasons why the academy dismissed him but, today, I think it might be a combination of movie ignorance and his reputation as a hell raiser that might preclude the appreciation he deserves. Anyway, I’ve never taken what the academy thinks seriously and neither does anyone who truly knows and appreciates movies. AMPAS is a shell of its former glory and is now a political cesspool more interested in endless profiteering, power and influence over Filmdom (like a country) than properly representing its history or commemorating those who made it what it is.
Movie lovers know that Errol Flynn was/is a true movie legend, still the best swashbuckler ever and the original adventure star that invented the model for that kind of actor today. He’s better remembered than 90% of all academy award winners, and his movies are still celebrated nearly 90 years since Captain Blood. He doesn’t need AMPAS. His legacy stands on its own.
