That’s at North Island Naval Air Station, Maria – on Coronado Island, west of downtown San Diego. I used to live on the island, only a few hundred yards from that exact spot. Errol docked the Sirocco near where I lived, across from the famous Hotel Del (Coronado). He loved it there, not only because of being near San Diego and La Jolla, but also because it was an easy trip (by boat or car) to Mexico.

I wonder if Warner Brothers, or maybe Errol himself, used to sometimes bring these type of scooters with them to shoots? The one below feels more like it’s probably at WB Studios in Burbank, about three hours by car from Coronado, maybe closer to four in those days, before “the 5” (US 5) was built.

I did find some other photos of celebrities on line -all with scooters – but I did not think to see if they were all employed by the same studio – it would make sense to have some sort of way to get around. Also a good advertisement for the scooter company!

I was at the “Del” about 20 years ago – I loved it – lucky you to have lived close by. I remember walking out the back and just watching the ocean for a long time. I had heard that the original building was haunted – I have to admit that was something I wanted to find out more about – but alas no chance for that! I really enjoyed the series of photos that were posted on the blog awhile ago -brought back memories and feelings of regret that I did not look around a bit more.
