Is the 2nd gentleman from the left Errol`s old man, or am I mixing up Cabot with cabbage again?

I believe who we have here, poloheinz, is James Gleason, Trevor Howard, the great Will Rogers himself, I don’t know, Spencer Tracy, and I-forget-his-name. Errol’s in England at the time of this shot.

Tracy was an avid player – polo player, that is. Here he is with Walt, and a more recent photo from Will Rogers State Park (at a Veuve Clicquot Campagne event)

Errol Flynn scholar Karl named the entire group. Beloved movie character actor James Gleason, film star Leslie Howard, Will Rogers, glamorous Carole Lombard, film star Spencer Tracy, and cowboy movie star Johnny Mack Brown. Of all these stars the bigeest at the box office was Rogers! Ralph

Thank you, Karl. You are a gentleman and a scholar!

I believe that photo was taken in 1934, immediately following the victory of Hollywood stars over Hollywood producers, or something like that. Will and Wiley died the following year, so I’m not sure to what extent Errol knew Will. … I also don’t know how great an actor Johnny Mack Brown was, but he was a tremendous running back for the Crimson Tide. Here he is earning the MVP and National Championship at the Rose Bowl!

Johnny Mack Brown was a true college football star before going to Hollywood. At the time of the polo club photo he was a star at MGM and even starred with Joan Crawford. After that he slipped into ‘B’ westerns at Universal but co-starred with Abbott and Costello in their big western hit “Ride ’em Cowboy” (1942). Afterward Johnny slippe into even cheaper westerns over at Monogram and began putting on weight in the 1950’s. He appeared in a few more westerns even cheaper than the ‘B’s into the 1960’s and was very heavy when he died. He made over several hundred film nearly all westerns.
