        So true, Paula. The camera clearly loved him from very early on. Don’t know if you’ve seen this one of Errol with the future “First Lady” of Australia, at a 1918 French Red Cross Benefit. It too is amazing. He looks like a Musketeer in Training.

    Well – not exactly what I ever intended for this distinguished thread! – But – while searching Errol’s connections to Austria, I found this rather intriguing somewhat Vienna-related account about how Errol has inspired so many other notable wanna-be-flynns. And, as this account emphasizes, Errol spent much less being the real Flynn, then those cheap imitation flynns – saving up to $135,000 an night doing so!

    Lovely, thank you! And what a gorgeous dog in the back seat. I have noted dogs with him in other photos. Perhaps, someone could look into that aspect of Errol’s life.

      Thank you so much, Elizabeth. Errol certainly loved his dogs! That’s his cocker spaniel, Guyceewee, in the car with him in his supercharged Auburn Roadster up on Lookout Mountain in Hillywood Hill, where he and Lili lived. … Babe Ruth used to drive one of those, too.

    In 1940, Errol flew down to Rio, famously staying and playing the casino tables at the majestic Copacabana Palace (where he again stayed in 1952.) In 1940, he partied also at the legendary estate of Cocoa, Cattle & Coffee King & Playboy, Darke De Mattos:

    Pardon the French, but in what was once Afrique Equatorial, Errol endured the environs of what is centered in and surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Ubangi-Chari, Cameroon, and the Republic of the Congo. Thus, his Hustonian-connected Roots of Heaven adventures are hereby categorized under ‘C’!

      I’ve been to this particular spot. You can’t see it but there is a breezeway behind the group leading to a small racetrack and beyond that are the playing fields and the bay. Not far from English Bay and the Sylvia Hotel. The Sylvia is where Errol stayed, and is within walking distance of 1310 Burnaby street where suffered his fatal heart attack many years later.

        While in the H’s, it should be recorded that I have found no evidence of Errol exploring Holland – at least not subsequent to the 1928 Olympics, but that’s another story, for another day.

        Personally, I believe it very unlikely Errol never went Dutch. For one thing, I can’t imagine him never seeing the birds of Amsterdam – not unless his exploits with the birds of paradise in Dutch New Guinea led to some legal prohibition against his setting foot on Dutch soil perhaps?

        Despite his adventures in Dutch New Guinea (and his missing the boat for the ’28 Olympics), I think Flynnie would have still visited Holland. Any one know?

    MALTA

    Errol sailed The Zaca to Malta when he lived in Europe. It is said (without any conclusive evidence that I know of) that he once owned the Black Pearl pictured below. … Perhaps it is the model for the boat used in the Captain of Fabian movie and/or poster? Perhaps not. But he definitely took The Zaca there.
