With a Little Help from His Friends

29 Nov

INSPIRED BY TWINARCHERS’ FAB POST, I HEREBY POST A TANDEM PHOTO TO HIS “RANDOM PHOTO” … WITH A TRIO OF INQUIRIES CONNECTING TO ERROL.

IT WAS FIFTY-NINE-YEARS AGO NEXT YEAR, SGT. PEPPER TOOK THE WORLD BY STORM – BOTH ITS MUSIC AND COVER ART. REGARDING ITS PHENOMENAL FRONT COVER – PERHAPS THE GREATEST AND MODT ICONIC EVER CREATED – I ASK THE FOLLOWING OF OUR ESTEEMED EFB AUTHORS:

1) HOW MANY OF THE FIGURES PICTURED BEHIND THE BEATLES DID ERROL PERSONALLY KNOW?

2) HOW MANY OF THE LOVELY LADIES DEPICTED DID HE DATE?

3) WHY ISN’T ERROL ON THE COVER? (OR, WHAT THE HELL WAS THE LONELY HEART CLUB BAND SMOKING TO MAKE THEM FORGET TO INCLUDE THE MIGHTY FLYNN?)

A little math oops there – Sgt. Pepper came out 48yrs ago next year (1967-2015), not 59 yrs — please don’t make me feel any older than I already am — LOL! I’ll be in my 90s by the time this LP hits it’s 59th birthday.

THANK YOU, beatlebeachgal!!! So sorry for the scare! There is good news, however! I’m more than a decade younger now! Go figure.

p.s. recording of the album began on december 6, 1966. … it was forty-eight years ago this week.

Might help if there is a legend of who the ‘real’ ladies pictured are on the LP jacket photo — there’s only 5 real ones here. They are Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple, Diana Dors and Marlene Dietrich.

FABulous answers, beatlebeachgal! Very few, even among the most fab Fab Four fans, know those – especially Diana Dors. Here’s a couple of more Errolian possibilities fir your consideration – Bette Davis & Joan Blondell!! (George is obscuring Bette (thank you, George) and Joan Might be/hace been in there, though very fuzzily!

If Errol knew Diana Dors, which he probably did, he is one of the very few people to have known all the distaff members of the Lonely Hearts Club Band – though I’m sure they weren’t lonely when Errol was around!

I, once again, sit corrected, beatlesbeachgal! My thought that the wonderful Joan Blondell may have been on the cover is incorrect. It’s not Joannie, it’s Anna Mae – Anna Mae Clift! Who’s Anna Mae Clift, you ask? Excellent question. I doubt any of The Beatles knew, either!!!! … She was the love if Alberto Vargas’s life!

And who might that remaining Pretty Girl(s), I mean Petty Girl(s), be??

Diana Dors lived just a home away from one of my aunts in the 50s when she was still in the US and living on Heather Rd in Beverly Hills. I met her on a few occasions then. And odd that you mention Joan Blondell because that same home on Heather where Diana D lived for a time, was one of the long time homes Dick Powell owned and live in while married to Joan Blondell.

I loved Joan Blondell and Dick Powell. They both did a fair amount of radio shows you can still listen to …

Flynn no doubt belongs there, twinarchers. Maybe we can get him on the 50th Anniversary cover, which, according to beatlebeachgal’s enlightened actuarial tables is stull in the future!

We shouldn’t feel too badly, though, Elvis. Ghandi & Jesus were cut from the team, “too”!! (Hitler, also, but that’s a hole nuther story!)

Any number of Flynn photos would have been spectacular on Sgt. Pepper. Which do you guys think would have been best? Here’s one that might have worked – unless The Beatles felt Errol’s hair was too long!

In this we have an exceptionally good view of Mr. Velez, Johnny Weismuller, as well as a look at where Queen Bette was hiding. Perhaps from The Private Lives of Elizabeth & Errol?

So, now we can safely guess Errol was in the head of at least one figure at the shoot – Petty Betty’s, who’s probably either plotting or gloating over her big slap.

p.s. Errol’s friend Sophia was in the shoot, too, but, unfortunatey wasn’t “close enough” to The Beatles to make the “cut”. Her and her Latin Lover Marcello were appatently too far right, or left – depending on one’s perspective … knocked out by Sonny Liston.

Could that be Errol’s buddie Tyrone behind John Lennon?

    Anyone see Mr. Schwartz?

This should help greatly in indentifying who Errol knew on the final cover: We can add No. 9, No. 9, No. 9 for Fred Estaire, for instance. (In an almost vertical row, nos. 6, 22 & 42 are Bill Fields, Tony Curtis & Tyrone Power.)

Just confirmed that Tom Mix is in the Mix, too! He was apparently exceptionally huge in England back in the day. Here he is with Errol in Reno, for the premier of Virginia City:

Meanwhile back at the ranch (with Tony & Tyrone), here is on the cover of Pepper:

I haven’t yet put Errol together with both Laurel & Hardy, though he may have well known both, but Errol and Stan Laurel were both members of the legendary Masquers Club (regarding which I hope to soon do a new and independent post):
