DESCRIPTION

The star of such classics as The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Sea Hawk, and The Adventures of Robin Hood, Errol Flynn garnered notoriety for wild and reckless behavior, a reputation that wasn't always warranted. In Errol Flynn: The True Adventures of a Real-Life Rogue, Lincoln Hurst masterfully sorts fact from fiction behind the famous name.

Relying upon never-before-published revelations by those closest to Flynn and by Flynn himself—including his explosive private diary during his visit to the Spanish Civil War in 1937—Hurst reveals a man and a story more extraordinary, complex, and fascinating than any role the actor ever portrayed on the silver screen. Hurst focuses on the least understood aspects of Flynn's life and exploits, such as the exact nature of his political beliefs and his largely-unknown private quest for life's meaning. The book concludes with a filmography, a collection of Flynn's unpublished letters, and personal testimony from those who knew him best.

    Hello,

I have just joined this blog having an interest in Errol Flynn in Spain. I have just seen an interview with Lincoln Hurst on the new dvd of the film “Hollywood contra Franco” which raised my curiosity. I live in Barcelona and research the International Brigades in Spain during the Spanish Civil War and some of the photos and mention that Lincoln had purchased Errol Flynn’s Spanish diary at an auction was fascinating! I have looked for Lincoln’s book on the web, but the cheapest I can find is $380! Out of my price tag!

So I am writing to Errol Flynn enthusiasts to get an idea of what the book contains concerning Errol’s time in Spain. I hope that clues and photos can help me identify places here in Spain where Errol was. I have located one shot of Errol by a kilometre stone near Albacete and I know he visited Palacio Ibarra on the Guadalajara battlefield too.

Any help would be gratefully received. My e mail address is hill705(at)gmail.com… and you can see my SCW work at www.pdlhistoria.wordpress.com…

I would be happy to show Errol Flynn enthusiasts who can help me in this matter the various locations I might be able to find in Barcelona if those people ever visit the beautiful city.

In hope and thanks in advance,

    Alan Warren

Hollywood contra Franco may be the documentary my friend Prof. Lincoln Hurst spoke of filming in emails written to me when he was very active in such projects. Unfortunately, Lincoln Hurst passed away before he could finish the book you mention, and it was never published. Despite this, the book has been listed as available on several websites as forthcoming and it is not – a great loss! I have the outline he proposed and some of the material he sent to me (among others he sent some of its contents to) but not enough to complete the book for publication. Chapters of it were lost entirely, and he was struggling to put the book together when he died after suffering a heart attack. It may be that he went home from the hospital to try to locate some of this material before he passed away – we will never know.

He did possess the Spanish Civil War diary, and I have a digital copy of it. I have Linc’s translation of it, as well.

I know he would have been fascinated by your website. It is quite an achievement particularly the photographs taken in a “then and now” fashion that a member of our blog Robert Florczak, in particular, will be interested in seeing! He has done similar research on a different subject, and traveled extensively doing this kind of work. He has, I believe, access to much of Linc Hurst’s research for his unpublished book – and it sounds like you are aware of Josef Fegerl’s excellent Errol Flynn – Dr. Hermann F. Erben, A Friendship of Two Adventurers 1933-1940 containing many rare photos of their experiences in Spain, including the one you mentioned near Albacete.

I’m happy you have joined our blog, and have signed up to receive notices about your blog posts on what is an incredible resource for anybody interested in the Spanish Civil War, and I applaud all of your activities and hard work!

      Regards,

      David
