Caesar’s Wife with Errol Flynn

14 Jun

Twice it was to be, Errol in Caesar’s Wife. Once with
Talulah Bankhead, in 1936. Once with Geraldine Fitzgerald, ca. 1943. Talulah was replaced by Kay Francis, leaving just Another Dawn. Then, in “43, Errol was said to have been replaced by Cary Grant, but Caesar’s Wife” was never made.

WOW! I’d never heard of this proposed film before. And with Olivia, too. So this isn’t “Another Dawn”? I read that “Another Dawn” was based on Maugham’s story “The Ambassador’s Wife”. Interesting, too, that the same paper mentions Hollywood’s desire to make Kipling’s “Kim” into a film.

I’m not at all familiar with The Ambassador’s Wife, zacal. I really only know of Caesar’s Wife from this story above, finding it fascinating that Errol’s Hollywoodland cricket coach, C. Aubrey Smith, was in Caesar’s Wife decades before Flynn. … It appears Warners must have dramatically rewrite Somerset Maughm’s play into Another Dawn, which is apparently significantly different than Caesar’s Wife, though I don’t personally know how different. Different enough, though, that Errol was to do CW with Geraldine Fitzgerald only six or so years later

South France is where Errol met Somerset. The author was a neighbour of Freddie McEvoy and his then heiress wife Bea Cartwright.

Where exactly did the Cartwrights live, shang? (And please don’t tell me the Ponderosa.)

Dear Tex, Beatrice Cartwright resided on Cap d`Àntibe in “Casa Estella”, which she bought in 1932 from the stepson of Robert Louis Stevenson.

Mucho merci, rivieraheinz. So it was Suicide Freddie who did the first Raid on d’Antibe. Not entirely his fault, of course – those Maseratis and mega-schooners of his required a lot of (standard) oil.

Besides, for a long time, Bea did say Freddie deserved an A+.

Looks like Bea might have hired George Bernard Shaw to keep Big Mac at a distance.
