Adding lustre to the already-illustrious career of Carl Jules Weyl (as if The Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca and Yankee Doodle Dandy were not enough), he also was an outstanding architect. Notable among his architectural designs are the original Brown Derby and the Hollywood Playhouse/Palace – which hosted the very first West Coast appearance of The Beatles (before the Hollywood Bowl) and which is now one of Hollywood’s hottest hip hop nightclubs, aka Avalon Hollywood! Said to be haunted and home of the world’s largest subwoofer, as well.

This is wonderful great news and a great find Tim!
Errol’s Robin Hood stood its time and will last forever! He should have received an Oscar for it.
With all the glitz and glamor he had in his star-life yet a lot of unfairness came with it too.
Yeah, and the Brown Derby was one of Errol’s hunting grounds too!

Thank you, Tina. Isn’t it wonderful how fun and far-reaching Errol’s unparalled talents and accomplishments continue to resonate, and in so many ways.

His work in Robin Hood certainly was weyl-done, Tina, but he would have never gotten that Academy Award without you-know-knew … the fellow locking lips with Livvie below. That Errol Flynn didn’t get even a nomination for his immortal performance in Robin Hood is a disgrace.

I agree that he could have (should have) been nominated for this performance. I felt the same way about Antonio Banderas’ performance in “The Mask of Zorro”. But Flynn also had a skill with the pseudo-Shakespearean dialogue that made you ache to see him in the real thing. The Sea Hawk is another film performance that could have been nominated. He made it seem so effortless. You felt that belief that you would follow him into battle.

That balcony drawing is an unbelievable find, thank you. I did feel the influence of Fairbanks 1922 film in the staircase that Maid Marian overhears the plan to kill the King.
