Olive Films has released for pre-order one of Errol Flynn’s most obscure and under-rated films ‘The Adventures Of Captain Fabian’ (1951). The film was expensively produced by Republic Pictures and shot overseas in Paris, France. Frankly it’s a dark, gothic story starring Vincent Price and Micheline Presle (the director William Marshal’s wife) as an evil couple in grand old New Orleans. Errol Flynn has thee title role and is in support along with the great Agnes Moorehead until the very end when Captain Fabian and his crew swashbuckle against a lynch mob. The film’s ending is heartbreaking and surprisingly Errol Flynn gives one of his finest dramatic performances ever. Olive Films has been releasing many Paramount and Republic films in beautiful pristine, DVD films so ‘The Adventures Of Captain Fabian’ will never look better! Ralph Schiller

And it is also the film that had Errol over a barrel, as he stated to his advocate deluxe Melvin Belli. It also led to a fallout with his director William Marshall, who retaliated by writing a tell all tale called “The deal”. It`s an aghast story meriting a post story here soon.

I watched it just a few days ago and was surprised to see in the opening credits that Errol Flynn wrote the script for this movie. I also agree it was a fine performance by him. On the other hand I didn’t think there was much chemistry between Errol and his leading lady. Just my observation. but thanks for the post.

Good point Daringthorpe! Micheline Presle became the director William Marshall’s wife. It is obvious that the director is infatuated with her with too many loving close-ups. In fact this film, which is a good one, would have been ever better with some trimming of Micheline’s scenes. Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead do superb work in the film. Ralph Schiller

I Googled up Goggled-Eyed Dr. Gangrene’s great but somewhat glummy summary. Price was right, despite those sideburns. Moorehead too, despite her sideburns. Not sure about the “club-footed stable boy” and all the rum-drunk “miscreants”. Love the old New Orleans setting though. … And then there was the “watery death”. … Thanks for the heads-up on the new DVD!
