    The olympics are making me so f….. sad. They keep showing the harbor of Vancouver , and I keep thinking of Errol out at a club talking about what a good place to die he was in. He was quite brave, once again, in a very unostentatious manner which was his style. I miss the hell out of him. I don't see anyone remotely similar around. Kevin Kiernan

    My dear Kevin;
    You are saying “I don't see anyone remotely similar around.”
    I am so sorry to disappoint you, but there will never ever be a person equaling Errol ever in our lifetime, it has not happened in the last 50 years and it will not happen in the next hundred years!
    Man like him are maybe born in a millennium – if ever!
    He had the unique gift of making people happy, feeling great and having, if nothing else, a wonderful everlasting dream!
    “He was one of a kind”! An accomplishment, which is unbeatable! He gave to his fans “The Impossible Dream” to dream about!
    But his personal fight of the windmills where unsurpassable for him, which is the saddest part of his life!
    How does one overcome the horrible dilemma of ones roots of which all and every problem stems? His problem, which all biographers, authors and everybody who likes so readily through a stone passes by so lightly, was the extremely abusive, autocratic, pathetic, tyrannical, immoral, depraved, pest of a mother and the aloof, under his wife's thumb, father.
    That is just to sum up very lightly the life of a man who was so much to so many and could have been so much more if he would have had the luck to be born to loving parents.
    To any child a loving home is the foundation and essence of everything in which a child will flourish!

    Tina- Thanks for your comments and observations. I hope we see people like Errol more often than you say, but you could be right. I don't think we'll ever definitively know why Errol suffered, but you may be absolutely right- his parents certainly seemed to do a rather horrible job with him. Do you or any of the other readers think there may have been a connection between his problems and his talent and acting achievement? Could his suffering or struggles have helped him gain more insight into roles or how to express complex feelings seemingly effortlessly? He certainly seemed more talented at this than his fellow actors. Kevin K

    Hi Kevin;
    Oh my god, where do I start not to write a litany or make a book out of it? I will try to be as brief as I can.
    Errol was very talented, but unfortunately quite stereotyped as a swashbuckler or the hero and therefore given only few chances to show his real enormous talent like he showed in some of his movies i.e “That Forsyte Woman” or “They died with their boots on” or “Footsteps in the dark” etc. Maybe one of our other authors are better equipped to answer this more precise. I love all his movies!
    I am glad you see the emotional problems too. Errol definitely suffered all his life from the abuse of his mother, that is a given. All abused children grow up with enormous fears, great insecurities, an extremely low self-esteem etc. and Errol had all these problems. Children, when abused either physical or verbally – mostly both – as in Errol's case are left with permanent deep scars, which are irreversible in the persons live, as it was with Errol!
    Errol was incapable of really, deeply loving a woman, it is quite possible he even feared them! He wanted to be loved – badly, but could not find love for long, because the foundation was missing – the love first given to a child by its mother, which instills this emotion was entirely missing! In all the woman he was associated with – he actually only was looking for the mother he never had and of course he never found her!
    Just visualize, there is the “World Star” the idol of millions, instead of being extremely proud of him what he archived on his own against all odds, there arrives the mother and of course reporters are everywhere and she has nothing better to say about her son “Errol was not simply a bad boy, he was a very nasty little boy.” That is a MOTHER? She should have been horse whipped! Warner Brothers had to work hard to squash this remark!
    You see, one has to take here also into consideration “Who actually was his mother?” She had theatrical aspirations for herself – a carrier! But frivolous as she was her pregnancy with Errol stopped everything. She married Prof. Flynn in January of 1909 and Errol was born in June! AND personally I am not so sure if Prof. Flynn was the father! He was interested in her sister Betty and therefore acquainted with the household.
    She hated her child all her life. In her mind she blamed Errol for ruining her life. She told Errol when about seven years old “I wish you would be dead.” There most likely could be said a thousand more things about her, but in this abominable environment Errol grew up, that was the foundation of his formative years!
    Errol being very intelligent naturally became rebellious, a prankster, mischievous, bad student all defying the treatment he received and all signs for attention and most of all love.
    In his biography he is not dwelling on it, because like anybody it was an open wound and therefore very embarrassed about it.
    Unbelievable as it sounds he was actually a very shy person! He always suffered of the inflicted inferiority, low self-esteem etc. thanks to his mother! To overcome these hidden maladies he resorted to his other natural talents – athletics, bravery, courageous, charming beyond words, bold, daring and his natural talent – acting! He lived in a world he created for himself to emotionally survive and most of all to escape the nightmares!
    In his own admission “… and wept more than most people would suspect.” I am sure he did!
    Only a badly abused person can really understand the agony he suffered! His affliction one could compare to similarities of a from of schizophrenia where through a enormous traumatic shock a person takes on a different personality or suffers amnesia. Errol always wanted to escape from something and mostly he escaped to the sea.
    I don't know if anybody can visualize his experiences in New Guinea, that life must have been a nightmare at best and he stuck it out for six years, if that is not brave what is?
    Then to make all matters even more compound he has the bad luck to meet his first wife – a cantankerous, ferocious and most violent woman if there ever was one! It must not be forgotten that Errol was quite naive when it came to woman in those days. She told him that she will jump out the window if he doesn't marry her and instead to say “Jump, baby Jump – shall I open the window for you” he married her – naive – big time – indeed! He had no break, no escape from dominant woman!
    After that the worst avalanche hit him – the trial! That destroyed Errol for ever and his suicide mission began!
    When you closely examine his life he actually never had much of a life! Although he said he had a great one – it's his famous FRONT, I feel he only lived in short intermissions!
    For what ever Errol did or was criticized about – it was very unjust, he was not the guilty party, in spite of it all he was a very good person! I myself maintain who should have stood trial was his mother and to a degree his father who was so blind not to see what was going on in his home!
    That's all for today dear Kevin, just a little synopsis – I could go on and on!
    Take care!

    Hi Tina, I agree with all of you have said. Lili did seem to be quite “violent” and I think that picture of the two of them getting on the airplane to fly to Arizona–don't you think he looks a bit shy and uneasy the way his arms are crossed holding his jacket? Yes, living in short intermissions because no matter how hard he tried it seems like something always came along to interrupt. Especially at the end when it was rumored he would be nominated (or was he and it was withdrawn) for the supporting actor Oscar. Up again and down again. You seem to know a lot about EF. Do you know anything at all about his sister? Is she still living and did she have children? I can only find that she married Charles Warner and he was in the Air Force. She visited EF in Jamaica when Earl Conrad was there writing w/EF and that's about it. Hoping you or anyone else has any facts?

    Kathleen- She passed away in a us military hospital in
    germany. Her husband was with the Army. She had been living in the Washington dc area where she was very active as a volunteer at the National Cathedral ( episcopalian). When she got sick, her husband managed to get her care at the US Army hospital in Germany. My sense is that she was a very nice person. Kevin K

    Hi Kevin;
    Thank you for your reply and if you have the picture of the two of them getting on the airplane to fly to Arizona you should publish it here on the Blog I am sure many of our supporters would love to see it. I don't think I have it!
    Yes, he was nominated for an Oscar for supporting actor, but apparently the nomination mysteriously disappeared. There is only guesswork around this mystifying situation, unless you get an inside information. Who knows what goes on with these nominations and who knows if maybe his life with Beverly at the time had something to do with it. It would be very sad if the later one had something to do with it as only the performance should be judged and not the private life. As far as I am concerned they treated him extremely unfair in all the years as he had movies for which he should have won an Oscar!
    Regarding his sister – Kathleen and Robert gave you a very good insight. I have nothing to add to their knowledge.
    Keep in touch Kevin, your comments are the essence of this Blog!
    Take care!

    Hi Tina. I posted the picture to photos. I found it somewhere and it is supposed to be Lili and Errol flying off to Arizona to get married. If this isn't right, someone can correct me. After looking at it again, he doesn't look as bewildered as I first thought.

    Hi Robert. Do you have any other information? She would have been 58, correct? Do you know if she had children?

    My understanding is that Errol himself ducked the nomination because he knew his personal life would be subject to examination in the press. He acknowledged the honor it would be as the rumor of his nomination spread but high tailed it out of town before general news of his relationship with Beverly would be discovered by the press. Or by the authorities!

    Hi Kathleen;
    Nice picture, although I read some place that he was nervous as hell. He really didn't wanted to get married, but apparently not just Lili forced him into it with her threat to jump out the window also Warner Brothers put pressure on to him because they lived together.
    He should have moved out, but….such is life! He maybe thought he could handle her, but he was much to naive in those days to realize what vengeful woman she was.
    Take care!

    Judging from Flynn's look in this picture, I'd estimate it to be around 1939, four years after they married. Although he did have a moustache briefly during the filming of “The Case Of The Curious Bride” in the spring of '35, it was much more pronounced than in your pic, and his hair resembles the look he had around the time of the 1939 Hurrel portraits.

    It is interesting to note that, although Flynn met Beverly on October 30th of 1957, one can hear him acknowledging the presence of Patrice in the February, 1958 interview with Tony Thomas (wherein Flynn's recent Oscar nomination is discussed). By April of that year he is already writing Beverly to join him in Africa, so it seems his separation from Pat occurred sometime between those dates, possibly in March. The presumption of his concern over public scrutiny of his current dalliance certainly holds water.
    From the as-yet unpublished tome, “Errol Flynn~A Chronology”, by yours truly!
