That is a great wartime photo of Victor Mature, in his U.S. Coast Guard uniform, with his fiancée Rita Hayworth. Mature, already a Fox movie star, was assigned to dangerous convoy duty in the treacherous North Atlantic near Greenland where German U-boat submarines ruled the seas. Over the ship’s radio came the newsflash that Victor Mature’s fiancée Rita Hayworth ran off and eloped with Orson Welles. The ship’s crew, who had kept their distance from Hollywood Victor, now embraced him as just one of their own. Unlike that old Andrews Sisters hit song “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree With Anyone Else But Me”, many gals did exactly that and sent ‘Dear John’ letters to servicemen boyfriends overseas. Victor Mature didn’t even get the ‘Dear Vic’ letter! Ralph Schiller
