Dr. Gerrit H. Koets

04 Apr

Dr. Koets was certainly one of Errol's most beloved friends.  I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a photo of him.

    Hi Russ;
    The name Dr. Gerrit H. Koets is a pseudonym, which was used in the autobiography instead of Dr. Hermann F. Erben who was the actual friend. At the time of publishing, Dr. Erben was unavailable to obtain the required permission to use his name, therefore the name Dr. Gerrit H. Koets was invented.

    There are quite a few pics of Dr. Erben about. Many of the bios about EF include a picture of Dr. Erben. Interesting, the book Dr. Erben published about his adventures with EF is up on Ebay. Here's a link in case you are interested.

    Josef Fegerl is the author of Errol Flynn/Dr.Herman F. Erben: A Friendship of two Adventurers 1933-1940 published in Austria in 1986. This is a fascinating book, and gives details you can't find anywhere else except Flynn and Erbens letters to each other of which I have a few copies. I paid $60 for my copy of this little red book and the price over the years has gone up considerably. An autographed copy is very rare!

    Ah, that explains why google searches weren't going far. Thank you! Now with the correct name searches are producing something, like this interesting page on a Christie's auction of letters from Errol to Erben:

    Hi Russ;
    The Christie lot is dated December 2005 that wouldn't be around anymore?

    Just by happenstance, I captured these photos of Errol and Hermann from The Adventures of Errol Flynn documentary which I just re-watched:

    I uploaded these to ImageShack; so if anyone wants to download
    and upload them to the Photos section here, feel free.

    This last pic was taken while Errol's recent face transplant was still fresh. Dr. Erbin, the surgeon who oversaw the critical operation, had recommended sea air for its healing qualities.
