EF TV

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

Errol was one of the most exposed movie stars of his time. His high and lowlights were documented all to well.

He did not shy away from the small screen either. Apparently he considered television as bonafide media to get his image across. In the paper clip above he was invited to Ken Murray’s Show of the Week in a segment called “Hollywood, my hometown”.

I wonder if anybody has seen this and furthermore knows of equally little known TV appearances of our Hollywood hero. Blog away dates, titles, co-stars and most of all… memories!

Enjoy

I remember the various Ken Murry TV specials well – they were on in the mid 60s, long after we lost EF.. Ken Murry took home movies for decades of his friends in Hollywood and on vacations he took with them. Those were the basis of his TV specials in the 60s when he finally edited them down and added in his narration. The TV special you asked about, Hollywood My Home Town is on YouTube – www.youtube.com… – there are a couple other of Murray’s TV specials on YouTube as well.

I remember seeing Murray’s home movies on TCM and they are always fun to watch. Roddy McDowell also took home movies for his own amusement and not for broadcast, no sound. An example is: youtu.be/2MsvJHwHHQg…

As a kid, I remember seeing Errol as the Gentleman Hobo on The Red Skeleton Show on TV (Freddies’s Beat Shack, September 29, 1959). I had no idea Beverly Aaudland was on the show as Beatnick Girl, of course, with Flynn or who she was but many years later because of my dear friend Prof. Lincoln Hurst who was a close friend of hers, I got copies of shows from her personal library including Errol on The Big Surprise hosted by Mike Wallace (1955-1957), her own appearance on You Bet Your Life (December 5, 1957) as a contestant and singing ALL Shook Up, dancing with Groucho and Flynn on The Martha Raye Show (June 7, 1955) which I think is the origin material for My Favorite Year because of a big Pirate Skit, and also a copy of Flynn in The Golden Shanty (Goodyear Theatre, November 9, 1959). I might have been the first to discover the lost episode of Without Incident (Playhouse 90, June 6, 1957) with Lincoln’s friend HM Wynant in the cast. Of the Golden Shanty, Rory Flynn has told me that she remembers being on the set with her sister Deirdre and that her father was far from weak. He had some rough days, she said, but was holding his own most of the time and is much more energetic in the role of Doc Boatwright that he is given credit for …

I’ve collected, I think, all of the Errol Flynn Theatre shows available except Declassee mentioned here. And there are quite a few others still out there. Of Flynn’s radio shows, I have collected quite a few, as well. I think my Lux Radio Show collection is over 1,000 shows, a small collection but wonderful listening, and Flynn appeared several times as did many of his most well known co-stars.

According to an old newspaper clip, Errol appeared alongside, or should we say ringside, Rocky Graziano on the Martha Raye Show. While Rocky stated he was Flynn with muscles, our Hollywood hero said he was black and blue all over from the champ`s friendly nudges to his ribs. More here:www.classictvinfo.com…

Yes, this was the Martha Raye Show appearance I have in storage. Rocky is part of a double date with a girl shy Flynn and Martha Raye in one of the skits.

I loved Errol cracking up during his “bit” with Martha!

Danke for that Rocky start. Now we must not neglect Bill & Cora Baird, highonthehillheinz. No one’s puppet was Errol, but, even so, he likely admired these masterful marionettes, who later gave us this masterpiece.

Danke for that Rocky start. And howzabout Bill & Cora Baird, highonthehillheinz? No one’s puppet was Errol -though puppetmasters Lili, Jack & Kurteez tried their hardest – but, even so, he likely admired these masterful marionettes, who later gave us this masterpiece:
