In should`ve been Flynn 5

06 Dec

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

a whale of a film hit our shores this week and in should`ve been Flynn long ago.
Originally released as “The Sea Beast” starring Errol`s idol John Barrymore in 1926, our Hollywood hero was lined up to do the remake.
As with “Don Juan” or “The master of Ballantrae”, Flynn was all in when it came to acting Barrymoresque.
But Errol didn´t get to do this prequel to “Moby Dick”, nor the even more fitting “Sea Wolf”, a Warner Bros product directed by Michael Curtiz, which had written EF all over it.
Due to Curtiz` caprices or Errol`s Flynnanigans `tis was not to be.
The silent flic though has stood the test of tides and can be viewed here: www.dailymotion.com…

Enjoy,

— shangheinz

Perhaps in some yet to be technology, even ahead of what we can do now, there will be a digital Errol Flynn starring in one of these sea epics that only he could do justice to. His face, form and voice … I’d love to live to see that day!

Thanks Witty Dave, you just gave me the idea for a blog series called “Flynntasy films”.

As always, classic work on your part, mobyheinz! Can’t wait to see what Howard and Hemsworth have done with H.M.’s masterpiece.

Though Captain Errol never hooked into the cinematic Moby property, or vice versa, musical Moby did hook into Errol’s Eddington property above Sunset Strip.

Yes, gangsterheinz, before Lynde this was no place for any Hollywood squares.

Even so, spooky calls from Errol’s girls made Paul’s world swirl, rendering his residency somewhat less gay and carefree than he had hoped.

btw, here’s a rare glimpse of Errol’s old phone cabana, before Paulie moved in. It was an around the clock operation.

What is ironic is that Warner Brothers remade “The Sea Beast (1926) in sound as “Moby dick” (1930) directed by Lloyd Bacon, with John Barrymore again playing Captain Ahab! Even more ironic is that Ahab gives up his bitter quest to kill Moby and instead runs off with gorgeous Joan Bennett to live happily ever after!!! Thanks Heinz, Ralph Schiller

An instant sequel to the prequel!? Thank you for that fine cineastic info, Captain Rahab. John Barrymore`s attire is very similar to that of Errol in “Cap Fab”, don`t you think, Ralph?

Mislabeled, apparently, as the 1926 version, here is Barrymore in the 1930’s version …
