    What is it about a sport that allows for games to end in a TIE??!! How incredibly frustrating. Imagine watching a film with great acting and exciting plot only to be denied the final scene!! Tip: Listen closely to the defenses for this rule and you'll hear some of the most colorful rationalization this side of a hyperventilating goalie.

    Hi Robert,
    Being English, the pain of defeat is just too hard to bear and a tie or a draw as we call it… even at the expense of possible victory is a much more painless option.
    That being said this is just the group stages of the World Cup, when it comes to the knockout stages there are no ties and then we move onto the dreaded penalty shootout and again being English… I know all about the pain that that can cause. Watching your nation in a penalty shootout is the most nerve-wracking thing you can ever go through as a football fan
    We've been knocked out of the World Cup and Euro Champs in 90,96, 98,2004,2006 on penalities. 1990 and 1996 to the Germans… which still brings tears to the eyes.

    Thanks for your personal take, MFM. I'm watching some of the matches with my German wife, feeling her joys and fears along the way. So far, so good for Deutschland!

    Brian, even though I'm German, I deeply feel with you – I've been an England supporter ever since Euro 96 because of David Seaman. Even though he's out now, I'm still with them rather than the German team… Let's hope we'll beat it this time!

    The Germans have been the most impressive team by far up to now; which is unlike the Germans as they are usually slow starters and get more and more dangerous as the tournament progresses. Heaven help the team who ends up in a penalty shoot out against them as they have never missed one against us in a shootout.
    England was in fever-pitch mode on Saturday – after the match there was a huge sense of deflation. Hopefully Friday will get us back on course.
    Was very impressed with the US team on Saturday… showed a lot of heart and determination.
    Robert, we have a fierce (but friendly) footballing rivalry with Germany and more often than not we've come out second best – I've never known national dejection such as we felt in 96… the pain was gut-wrenchingly bad… to lose on penalties was painful beyond belief!!… to lose on penalties to the Germans!! Again!! words can never express the pain.

    Can England get any worse? Held to a draw by the mighty minnows of Algeria. I despair, I truly despair but at least the Germans, Spanish and French lost.
