I had not seen this one. I'm used to viewing EF as a young man and it is hard to watch him in his more mature roles. I have to say I did not fall asleep and I liked this movie. I liked watching him. He still was a handsome man when this was made in 1957 I believe and hard to fanthom in two years he would be gone. He seemed to do a lot of walking in the first part of this movie and I was wondering if he would ever get in a car to find the missing plates. He's very good at being flip and some of his gestures made me think of Sea Hawk (of all things!).

Very interesting comment, Kathleen. I think Errol's late films are mostly underrated, and I cannot figure out why. As you said, it's certainly not a film to fall asleep. I think the walking is to show the beauty of Havana – if he had gone by car, we wouldn't have admired the city.

    Hi.
I agree that many of Errol's later films or his performance therein tends to be under rated (e.g., Sun Also Rises). Kathleen, I agree that Errol was still very handsome in his later years. His greatest “starring” vehicles were behind him so perhaps that has something to do with it. Initially I found watching him in his later roles difficult and sad in ways because the dissipation shows. Like you, I was used to him on screen as a dashing young man. But, by viewing his later roles, I came to appreciate what a fine character actor he really was when given the chance. Personally, I think he should have been nominated for the above mentioned role.
