here is one role Errol was practically sea- born for.
Heck, even Jack Warner had suggested our Hollywood hero for the role of the daring navigator 10 years prior to the 1951 version with Gregory Peck.
It is easy to envision our Hollywood hero as commander of the 7 seas and steering his career back on course.

I am sure Errol wanted to stay away from most of these costumed hero’s, as he wanted desperately get other parts to disassociate himself from these in which he was so tired of.
As we know it, Jack Warner had a gold mine in Errol when it came to the hero masquerading in either costumed characters of swashbuckling sea going, or westerns and then later WWII soldier.
Errol on the other hand probably seen this as another of Jacks way to sucking the blood out of him for the sake of big box office money for the Warner Bros.

This was truly a missed opportunity. Every great swashbuckler that could have starred Flynn and didn’t is the worse for it. My wish is that Errol would have embraced his status as the King of the Swashbucklers the same way that John Wayne embraced being King of the Westerns. It was Flynn’s domain, a world that spoke Shakespeare-inspired dialogue. There was nothing that Errol Flynn couldn’t act in but he simply dominated the swashbucklers. For the record, Gregory Peck was terrific in “Captain Horatio Hornblower.” I just wish it had been Errol.

Agree Zacal, we were so blessed to have him in those flicks – hence, reason as to why we came to his attraction in the first place.
We have all heard how so many have said derogatory things about his acting or non-acting abilities, but in as much as most had come around years after his death and rescind their claims; all one has to do is look at the great performances he made, such as with the great Betty “The Bitch” Davis in “Elizabeth and Essex” – how he took that wallop, rings and all, of which she threw with ill will upon his face. You know you have to handed to him, It takes a lot for one such as himself, who does not take no crap from people, male or female, and yet still sustain in bringing a great performance without the audience ever seeing a glimpse of what was the real truth…
