Jim Fleming

20 Mar

I wonder if there is anybody “in the know” regarding Jim Fleming, (Errol's friend, stand-in, housekeeper/manager), I believe they met up around 1935 but they fell out in 1949. Tried to dig into this subject for quite a while without results. I wonder if there is anything on him. I am sure it would be great reading material and a great contribution to the site. I think Jim could tell a story or two what went on in Errol's hey-days. Maybe from Alexander, the valet/butler even more.

I’m in the midst of reading “My Wicked , Wicked Ways” and can’t help wondering if the man I had met back in 84 in a pub called the Yankee Clipper in Seagirt NJ was indeed the man he said he was — Errol Flynn’s Stand-in..I don’t recall much about the conversation though I was the one who had initiated it..I was 28 at the time and this man appeared to be somewhere in his 70’s..I remember thinking how much he looked like Errol Flynn and I just knew that if I asked him had he ever been told he was a dead ringer for Flynn that his reply would be, yes–many times..What I wasn’t prepared for him to say, in a very matter of fact manner, was that he had been Flynn’s stand-in for many years and they had shared an apartment together..I was skeptical and he couldn’t have cared less..lol…He did say his name was Jim and I vaguely recall him telling me about some of the movie stunts he had done..Whatever else was said is a blur to me now, I mean after all, I was young at the time and really not interested in chatting much further with an old guy who claimed to have been Errol Flynn’s stand-in…Through the years I’ve wondered on occasion whatever happened to this guy –The Yankee Clipper is long gone and no doubt so is Jim..

What a great story, thanks for sharing it and it really is a pity that you were “too young” back then! ;-)
