Dear fellow bloggers/authors,
I just got a marvelous idea to keep the right spirit going and give the site even more “zest. Probably a “first” among such quality websites. Why not take it in turn for each regular author to ask the others a quiz question on a weekly basis and get everybody (time permitting) going, searching and trying to give the correct answer. I think that keeps the juices and spirits (excluding alcohol) flowing I would say, what?
I don't mean questions like: “Who was the director of such and such film made in such and such year. Or “In which film did Errol have to grow a beard?” Neither, “Who co-starred opposite Errol in “Hello God”? (although I must admit that would be a great trick question now I think about it (haha!). Hell no, I mean more “deep down” substantial questions. Now I am writing this I become quite serious about it actually. Is there such a thing as “I demand or I insist?”

I am not sure that everyone will have time as you mention to take their turn at it but it is a fine idea to post a weekly question. Sometimes these questions crop up on their own as a result of an article being posted. But I like your spirit and motivation!
I would suggest that along with the more serious questions there should be purely fun questions, too! How to administer who asks next could be tricky since we come here when we have time and one of the things I like to stress is the voluntary nature of when people show up to participate.
Hmmm. Maybe there should be a single person who is offered question ideas and that person puts up the next question? If no new idea for question arise, this person makes up one and posts it?
I volunteer YOU Jan to be that person!
You can offer the position to someone else if you are busy, naturally, as we all can become involved in other things at any unexpected time!
What do you say?

A.B.C.D.E.F. – American Boys' Club for the Defense of Errol Flynn
In some of my books I also have the name of the founder member – at least I think so, but that would take me to long to find. I just know that there also was an author / politician involved with the club, but the name escapes me – he was quite famous.
Sorry that's all I have to offer of the top of my head. I should have started a chronicle too, but never thought of it. There you go Robert, see how clever you are – sheer genius!

Boohoohoohoohoohoohoo!!!! I didn't have a chance here in Europe because when the question was asked, I was all asleep and when I woke up again, it was all answered! Now that would be a point to be considered… to give us people from the old continent a chance!
As for the ring (now my chance), are you talking of the wedding ring in form of a chain which has mysteriously disappeared and pops up in many of his early films?

You see, that is what I guessed would happen, that is what it is all about. Great stuff. Robert is right, alcohol should be included. I normally can only work better between hang-overs!! (joking)
Due to instant popularity, I might have to patent the idea. Perhaps questions on a weekly basis will turn out to be on a hourly basis by the looks of it! Reading David's comment also, I am grateful that I can ask the first official question and here it is.
(The answer is so easy that even my cats could do it in their sleep.)
Question: Jack Barrymore had a nickname for Errol. Which one?
By the way, Robert, yesterday I buried the “verbal” hatchet, so we are OK again. So, it is all official now. And for your question regarding that ring, I wouldn't know the answer. I can only say I have a stunning gold ring (10kt only) of Errol's, made with black onyx and a gold Roman or Spartan warrior on top. I can send you a picture if you like one of these days. Missed out on another one years ago, due to Internet glitch in Spain when I was bidding on it. But this one will do very nicely.

David, I got an idea. I have no idea how this blog works, but is there an additional component where you can add quizzes? If not, I think there would be one which I could host on my website. I am still learning how to do this, but I think it might be possible. What do you think about this? There could be a direct link from the blog to the quiz and anybody could take it without publicly giving the solution before a certain time… and after a week or so the solution is displayed on the blog?

Your answer comes as a question, I just noticed. I found his nickname in the disputable book from Charles Higham. He was also called “Princey”, when he was making “The Prince and the Pauper”.
Congratulations are in order, girl. And you scored the first point, but I like to barter here, and I suggest we get half a point each, as I knew it also(haha). If we apply your suggestion, which I like very much. David, our Flynn wizzard, will shake his magic wand and will do this in an instant, won't you David?? Why not?
By the end of the year, the Quiz Champion of 2011 should receive a handsome bonus prize from David himself through PAYPAL into the winner's account, I would say no less than USD 1000 (I suggest it will be paid in US Dollars as one thousand Zimbabwe dollars are almost worthless these days!)
So, this week's quiz question is now answered correctly by Aresia. Maybe if this takes off well and so fast then we need to have a daily question. Perhaps the next question should be a bit tougher, right? Who's next?

firstly, as you were the initiator of the quiz, you should provide the prize – maybe one of your memorabilia?

I was wondering if I should take the bait or not so here it is! I noticed often enough that women seem to have a “one track” mind (calm down, don't start, it is only a joke!). However, regarding the first suggestion, the reply is quite simple and not quite the answer you expect. Always believe in the unexpected, much more than the expected.
We probably should cause mutiny here and group together or get a petition together gently forcing David to prepare the settings, formula or mode, so without a doubt as it benefits his site tremendously, it does make sense if you think about it. Even IF I was even remotely interested than this suggested prize money would then be only in the shape of “kind”, not money. Private memorabilia is not an opion here either, sorry. Because most items are well about the prize money. But I do second the last part of your comment with all my heart.

Interesting question, never asked myself this because I thought of one of the French kings somehow… but that's nonsense, of course. So Barrymore probably referred to the French actor René Navarre, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong. Does anybody see a resemblance?

I think it was indeed referred to the King of Navarre, definitely not the actor. (I know people in low and high places, you see, Wikipedia is one of them!) No, really I read it somewhere, probably in Higham's book, which of course is no guarantee. By the way, for the fellow bloggers who would like to know what makes me “tick”, I finally uploaded a photo wearing black clothes, the black shirt does have the embroidered Qmark, one can see it once one gets close to me (there is a waiting list), plus the absolute minimum info one should know about me for this moment, I might edit it and add more when the mood strikes me! I sent David a few photos for him to decide if they are beneficial for the website, some yes I reckon. I leave that entirely up to him, one of them is of a shirt of mine with the black logo and two EF cufflinks. I promised Tina or Aresia, but it takes time. Apart from that, anytime soon, the Gib document of Errol's stay there 50 years ago will be added to the blog.

As to “prizes” I think providing a correct answer is prize enough!
This will add a lot to the blog because people do have many questions both serious and fun about dear ol' Errol and this quiz idea will serve to provide some of these answers. Overall, the Q&A will be informative and pure fun, too.
I have added a new category to give this activity a central place to occur (it can also be done off blog simultaneously hosted elsewhere as suggested!) and now we must figure out how to give our friends in European times zones a chance to participate.
The way to do this might be to wait 24 hours before anybody answers a question from this side of the world.
Perhaps all questions should have dates and times on them set 24 hours in the future so that the answers cannot be posted before that date? This will give our European members and readers time to see the questions and us here time to think about the answers!
In any case, this is an evolving process so whatever way it finally ends up being done it has sparked a lot of interest and that is always a very good thing!

That's right the fun is all the important part in this equation.
What about this idea to cover the time problem between Europe and America.
The question is placed and who ever wishes to answer puts their answer on the appropriate site and one week later the question host will publish the answer. Anybody who during the week posted an answer will find out a week later if she/he was right or wrong.
No question mark answers, either it is an answer or not.
Just a thought – like they do it in the magazines. They put out a crossword puzzle or whatever and you either solve it or not, a week later one finds out – what is what.
Take care David, and trust us to put nothing but extra work your way and it is all Robert's fault – the instigator – LOL – besides that, get a load of this – “The Prize” – I nearly won from Robert – just the thought of it gives me sleepless nights! It feels like the million dollar ticket where the last number is out one digit! Joke aside, I know a person like that, she has the ticket framed on her living room wall.
Aren't we a wonderful bunch of nuts! I think Errol would have enjoyed this company!

Now comes the interesting question?
Who was the person he meant with Navarre?
Don't forget Barrymore was a Shakespearean actor!
Was it the character Ferdinand (King of Navarre) in “Loves Labours Lost” by Shakespeare? I don't think so!
But as John Barrymore was inebriated, ever so cleverly pointed out and in a most dignified way by Errol – spelling Navarre with three “R's” – Barrymore, obviously having a slight slur in his speech or memory problems, known due to alcohol, could have meant an entirely different person.
This is the year 1935 at MGM Studios.
Now I wonder who he could have meant? Mixing up a character in a play or a real king, I doubt that very much. He was thinking of a real person, known to him and a fellow actor at MGM. Adding one and one, I am coming up with an, at the time very famous MGM actor. Barrymore and this actor are both under contract at MGM and must have known each other in some way or another.
In my humble opinion John Barrymore referred to Ramon Novarro.
I am not staking my life on it and if somebody has a better idea please post it.
That's my slur for this subject.

I send two messages to you about the picture with Danielle and another one about the heiress that it would be a good question for the quiz. David must have them in his spam collector.
Now my question about the ring is not vague, just get with it as you usually do and answer it or say “I give up!”
Nobody else is participating I wonder why? Maybe we do not strike a cord? Maybe not a good idea at all?
It is way past my bedtime and be better think that over, after all it is a lot of work for David and if members don't bite we are barking up the wrong tree!

Well, Tina, it seems more likely that Barrymore compared Errol to your Navarro than to my Navarre. Even though both were popular at the time. The big picture (sorry, David, but since it is only a link, I thought this would not spoil the blog, at least not too much) shows René Navarre, too. Well, I guess we'll never know what exactly Jack thought…

What was vague about this question? I thought is was perfectly straight!
I thought nobody could ever forget, once reading it, to visualize Errol with an imprint of a “bottle ring” on his nose. He must have looked comical at no ends! That why I always thought he would have made a perfect Cyrano de Bergerac! So the nose would have been long instead of ringed not much of a difference – a little deformity one way or the other. They should have taken Errol for Cyrano it would have been a first class movie!
