What was Chico?

1. The name of Errol’s best friend?

2. The location of Warner Brothers Studios in Northern California?

3. Errol’s pet ape?

4. First mate and Spanish translator during Errol’s Cruise of The Zaca?

5. The Maitre ‘D at the Mocambo Club?

6. Errol’s Dachshund?

7. Lili Damita’s chauffer?

That would be #2, I believe … WBs studios in North California?

That’s the second best answer, Philip. But it was really a trick choice, because – though Robin Hood was extensively filmed in Chico, California – Warner Brothers has never actually had a studio there.

    Thanks, Philip.

I was going to say the same thing. It is mentioned in the Robin Hood DVD about location work shooting.

Despite reports to the contrary, Chico was actually a gibbon (which is an ape), Maria, but you obviously deserve victory on this, because it’s so very close, and very hard to ferret, so to speak. Congratulations! That was a very difficult one!!

P.S. I have a good story about Chico, but am not able to post it until later

        Modern Screen Magazine, 1950:

The zoo that Errol Flynn has at his hilltop
        “Mulholland Farm” above Hollywood may
soon be just another memory like Pola
        Negri’s leopards.

Latest resident of the private zoo to leave
is Chico, Errol’s pet ape. The neighbors com-
plained about Chico, and I can hardly say I
blame them. I’ll wager his bride wouldn’t
have cared for this kind of pet either.

Having an ape live across the street would
be enough to make me nervous, but Chico
developed a very disturbing habit. He began
getting up early, and his shrieking got on
the neighbors’ nerves. The few neighbors
who weren’t nervous already, that is.

Additional Information on Gibbons which would explain the neighbour’s reaction to Chico!

Gibbons wake at dawn! As the sun warms the enclosures, you will see an arm poke out of a sleeping box, and then perhaps a leg, a head… and finally each gibbon is awake!

There’ll be some grooming, some yawning and a little chatter. They’ll stretch a little and swing down to make sure no trespassers have come in during the night to claim their territory.

Just then, one gibbon family starts their morning song… and everyone is up! All the gibbon families rise to the call and, in their family groups, join in with their unique territorial calls.

Gibbon Centre staff never need alarm clocks. Some of the songs can be heard up to 2 miles away! (Oh, and did we mention they break into song periodically throughout the day?)

What great, fun research, Maria! I had no idea. Flynn really was a character! … And what a bunch of fussy neighbors, not wanting to greet the morning with such polite and peacable creatures.
