Nick Thomas sends us this photo of Flynn and Beverly on The Red Skeleton Show 1959

Nick writes:
Have you seen this one? Errol Flynn's last performance as a hobo on “The
Red Skelton Show” (along with Beverly) from September 29, 1959. Might
be nice for the blog if you think people haven't seen it.

I think we have this on the blog somewhere, in fact – but this
may also be a variation of the one we have? Or perhaps it is
only cropped differently! In any case, identical or not I like
this photo a lot and Flynn, I think, doesn't look as ill as he
really was….

I haven't seen the show, but know the photo and always almost have tears in my eyes when I see it. It's so sad, and I think Errol does look ill, and so sad…

When I see these pictures of the declining Errol I actually cry. These pictures always make we wish that H.G.Well's Time Machine would be a reality as I would set it to January 1941 and I would take all the documentation with me as Robert Taylor did in the movie (they did not disintegrate in time travel) and show him what he is going to do to his life. Of course Robert Taylor went forward in time and maybe therefore they did not disintegrate as I would go backwards they might. In this case as I would watch over him like a mother hen without him knowing and would clear away the obstacles, i.e August 1, 1941, September 23, 1942 etc.etc.etc.
A wonderful dream – we all can dream – no taxes charged on it and it makes you feel good too!
Come to think of it my scenario would make a great Errol Flynn science fiction with a happy ending. I am a dreamer – I love Happy Endings – don't you!

Ah, a nice dream, Tina! I'd have to join you on your trip back in time to help Errol. I love Happy Endings too! :-)

For me that is one of the greatest photos ever taken of Flynn. I have it in 10×8 and framed… I've often looked at it and thought 'old friend… just what the hell is going through your mind?'. Tired… old… weary… and about to sell the Zaca… he went at the right time.
    best wishes,
    Brian.

Speaking of Rober… er… I mean Rod Taylor: Have any of my fellow blog members come across a rather strange and rather good Western Rod Taylor did called 'Chuka'?
I first saw this film when I was a young boy, it came on terrestrial televison one night, quite late and certain images from the film stayed with my for years… I spent my childhood thinking this was the greatest Western ever made but knew neither the name of the film or who was in it.
The film remained an enigma for me for many, many years, the images from the film stayed in my mind but I kind of gave up the search to find out what the film was called and gave up any hope of ever seeing it again. I had convinced myself that it may have been one of those crazy b-movie spaghetti Westerns that would never again grace a television screen.
A few years ago I began to get very interested in British cinema and this ineveitably led me into the films of John Mills.
I started searching out as many Mills films as I could, started collecting stills etc… but there was always this one film that seemed very elusive and very hard to find. A strange little Western called 'Chuka'… John Mills in a Western!!! was my first thought… what the hell was the great English actor John Mills doing in a Western. After a few months of searching I finally got myself a copy of 'Chuka' and I eagerly sat down to watch it; imagine my great suprise and delight when it turned out to be the elusive Western that I had seen as a child and searching all my life to find.
Watching Chuka as an adult didn't have quite the same effect that it had on me as a small boy but it is still one hell of an under-rated film and very, very nearly a great one.
    best wishes,
    Brian.

    Hi Brian;
Very nice story I like it. I had a similar experience with a movie when I was young and I can't find it either. But I am still looking, maybe one day I find it too.
Also, I have no idea why I have written Robert Taylor when Rod was on my mind, who I always liked. I don't even like Robert Taylor, but sometimes things happen – like a short fuse!
    Best wishes, Tina

Yeah, it's strange how some images from certain films remain in your head and you cannot sort them out anymore. But you always meet them twice, as they say. I am thinking of a certain cartoon series which I loved watching when I was a child, and some years ago I happened to see it again on TV… memory is a strange thing.
