    Good show, sir nottingheinz!

Clue No. 7: … Except in this mystery movie, Jimmyhood road not a horse, but a boat.

Clue No. 8: One of Errol’s Dawn Patrol costars was also in this movie, as well as one of one of Errol’s future wives future long ago and far away husbands. … Neither Cagney nor these other two well known parties had lead roles in this Best Picture picture, but they were indeed extra-ordinary.

Oops, I was still editing when you wrote, twinarchers.

Good choices, but Cagney was not a lead in this classic, which was in the theaters before Errol hit Hollywood like a Bloody Typhoon.

Mr. Roberts is an especially good guess, as there are some very strong analogies between Cagney’s role and a main character in this mystery film.

One of the Best Actor Nominees was later friends with Errol, sometimes even monkeying around up at Mulholland.

Sorry to spoil the fun GT but I believe you are referring to “Mutiny on the Bounty” (Flynn connection/Young) …. Clark Gable (friend)… Remake or not? is actually a stupid play on words; if its used in the same format as the original movie, version, etc. then it’s a remake, but if you make it from the story without implications of the first, then it makes it an original – something like that…
As far as I’m concerned its all bunk!
The original 1916 version, lays the foundation to all of those that follow, including the 1963 Academy winner version…

In some of my journeys I happened upon an estate sale, which I frequent here and there, and found a nice little gem; Life Mag with him on the front cover (1938) – I guess they did not know what they had, got it for $1…

Your point regarding the 1916 film is very well taken, Serge. This “remake” concept has some support on all sides I suppose. Perhaps the biggest differentiating factor between the silent film and all that followed commencing with Flynn’s is that the 1916 version is not based on the 1932 book.

I’ve never seen the silent film version, but have read that it’s an “accurate” account of the mutiny’s history, and significantly different from the book published sixteen years later, including in its depiction of Captain Bligh.

Here’s something from The Bounty’s old stamping grounds featuring the 1916 film.
(Has anyone alive ever seen this film??)

Then there’s the extra-special extras of Gagney, Niven & Haymes (the entertainers, not the law firm)

In tribute to Serge’s very astute observation respecting the 1916 Mutiny in the Bounty, here’s a very cool image. Young Errol Flynn may well have seen and been greatly inspired by this legendary Australian silent film. Charles Chauvel certainly so.

No, neither have I seen the ’16 version, yet would love too.

I regarding the ’35 version, I have to admit, in as much as I have seen that version a good few times, I don’t remember ever catching Cagney, Niven, or Haymes – Not boasting, but I am generally pretty darn good at seeing the unusual in a flick, especially after seeing it a couple times; always looking for something new in the background, and so forth.
So now my curiosity is definitely sparked. I will be treasure hunting through my collection, playing it again – maybe Cagney was one of the native girls in grass skirts? Bon-Voyage

With his fairly fair Irish complexion, Jimmy didn’t didn’t quite make the cut as a grass skirt South Seas siren, Serge. Rather, they dolled him up as one of the Brit birds the mutineers left behind. In addition to allowing him to present his feminine side to his most loyal fans, this also allowed him to hide from JW, his beloved boss from Burbank.

Here’s Cagney in a key scene, third from left. … No wonder those guys didn’t want to return home. These lassies look nearly as bad as Laughton.

To make a few more extra bucks, he also did a topless scene:

Deep down, I guess Jimmy wasn’t so tough, Serge, though I don’t think you’d ever catch him admitting that in public.
