Zaca

13 Apr

Errol stated in his turbulent life that he named his yacht “ZACA” after the Samoan word “Peace”, there seems to be some controversy regarding this as it is said that the Samoan language doesn't have the letter “Z”, probably another Flynn practical joke.

Is it perhaps possible that he chose the name after visitng Lake Zaca in California? We all know he travelled enormously, even the name “Errol” means wandering.

Comments please.

    Hi Jan,
    Errol didn't actually name the yacht; It was already called the Zaca when he acquired it. The boat came with a rich history and was actually built in 1927, I think?. (check out Luther Greene's 'In the Wake of the Zaca)
    best wishes,
    Brian.

    Hi Brian,
    Almost got fooled by Errol after all these years. I just checked Thomas McNulty's book and on page 194, it states clearly that Errol was mistaken about the Samoan word “ZACA”, it apparently derives from the Chumash Indian tribe near the Santa Ynez valley north of Santa Barbara.
    So truth is restored here I hope.
    Errol could tell a tale or two, accurate or not, that was his derogative, right?

    Hi Jan;
    At the left side of this page you see a tab “Ships & the Sea” click on it and scroll down to “The Zaca Today” there is all the info of the Zaca and as Brian says Luther Greeene's site www.zaca.com… has all the info too. This is also the site where one can purchase the DVD “In the Wake of the Zaca.”
    Take care,
    Tina

    Hi Tina,
    Yes, I will have a look at it, thank you for the kind advice. I am still baffled about your quiz question, I keep paging in all sorts of books I have on EF, nothing comes up as a decent answer. I thought the days of sleepless nights were over, now it starts all over again. (ha!)

    Hi Brenda;
    This is a wonderful name for this breed as they are described to give the impression of grandeur and dignity. These dogs are very impressive! Very fitting indeed!
    Take care

    Hi Tina,
    I bet you didn't know these Rhodesian Ridgebacks Errol had as pets were specially exported by an English breeder to America and were the only two of that breed there at that time. One was called “Jack” and the other one “Mike”. I am sure you know who they were named after. If you don't as bring our Master Sleuth, then I suggest it will be the next quiz question. (ha!)

    Any serious fan knows about these dogs being the first ones imported to the US, but do YOU know who was the breeder actually? THAT would be a good quiz question.

    Hi Jan;
    Yes Jan – I did and I do know and I have pictures too when he exhibited his Ridgebacks in 1939.
    It is said: The credit for bringing the first Ridgebacks to America goes to Errol and one of his dogs were acquired later by William Howard O´Brien in 1950. After 1950 William Howard O´Brien gained recognition for the Ridgeback breeding in the United States.
    Manamuke and Manamume of Mullholland
    Manamuke of Ledes
    UK > USA
    Owner: Errol Flynn
    imported from UK by the famous actor, Errol Flynn
    Manamume of Ledes
    UK > USA
    Owner: Errol Flynn
    Imported from UK by the famous actor, Errol Flynn.
    And for the names Jack and Mike?
    Of the top of my head I would say Jack – John Barrymore
    and Mike – Michael Curtis
    That's it for today!

    Hi Terry;
    It would be a good quiz question, but here it is the breeder, which was Olive, Lady Baillie of Leeds Castle.
    That why the two dogs where called
    Manamuke of Leeds and Manamume of Leeds.
    Errol purchased the dogs from her in 1938 or 1939 Lili Damita was with him. Maybe it was the time on his way back or to it of the Spanish civil war. Trust him to purchase dogs on his way.
    He was the first breeder and person to bring the Rhodesian Ridgeback to America. Another record for him and what beautiful dogs they are.
    Take care,
    Tina

    Would rather opt for Jack Warner… We discussed his visit to Leeds Castle some time ago, Tina, while you were absent, and I contacted them and they told me when exactly Errol signed their guestbook. However, Robert with his amazing chronology tended to say that this was probably not the correct date. I have been to Leeds Castle in 2009 and accidentally learned about Errol's visit there… but as I said, the staff are unable to give further exact information.

    I was well aware of all this, and my question was more of a rhetorical one. I remember that the blog discussed this Leeds Castle some time ago. It is a pity that you already gave the answer though, I believe it would have been a good question for your quiz section and others could have shown what they know, too.

    Hi Inga;
    Yes, it could be so! But I know that he called John B. – Jack! It could be either B. or W, if the dogs had such simple names. I have no knowledge what Errol himself called the two dogs, but somehow I doubt it that it was “Jack and Mike” anyway.
    Errol always had the most unusual names for all his animals, dogs like Guyceewee, Chula, Peewee etc. Why would he give to these most unusual dogs and being the first in the US such simple names, in particular when they had such unusual names to start with.
    Jan will have to give a lot more details of his statement!
    Have a nice weekend,
    Tina
