BATTERS UP!

14 Oct

A DOUBLE HEADER QUIZ

FIRST PITCH – Right Down the Middle

With the summer season of Cricket beginning Down Under, who was “The Errol Flynn of Cricket”?

SECOND PITCH – A Screw Ball

What film did both Errol and Lili appear in?

This being a Hall of Fame-level pitch, I provide the following batting tips
(not that they’ll likely help much – this a very, very tough one!):

> It was produced by Howard Hughes.

> Paulette Goddard co-starred.

> E.F.Hutton was involved.

> It was filmed entirely outside California.

OK first ‘pitch’ is the great Keith Miller

Second ‘pitch’ is trickery – my first thought was Pirate Party on Catalina Island??

Alrighty then, now we have the second pitch to hit, a pitch even Babe Ruth (and Keith Miller) likely couldn’t hit (unless they had an inside tip of where to swing.)

    Even so, here’s some mo’,

    > Howard Hughes also directed.

    > It was filmed in Palm Beach in 16mm for showing at a costume ball.

    > Prince George of Russia was also in it (dying shortly thereafter in New York at the age of 35)

And, as said previously, these two friends of Charlie:

Atwater Kent – legendary inventor, home radio pioneer and thrower of lavish parties at Capo di Monte (which later became the Bel Air Hotel) – was also in this 16mm film, a film which was a burlesque of one of Errol’s masterpieces.

I believe no-good Jimmy “Woolworth” Donahue and/or perhaps his also-no-good Mom, Jessibel Jessie Woolworth Donahue, had a role in the film, also – a couple of low lifes who lived the high life.

April 18, 1938 – Hollywood Citizen News, Sidney Skolsky Presents

Errol Flynn and the Warners are feuding, with Mr. Flynn having told the studio that he will return from his vacation when he feels like it.

April 19, 1938 – Los Angeles Evening Herald Express, Harrison Carroll

Hollywood likes to talk about its million-dollar casts, but a 16 millimeter film shot recently in Palm Beach really had one. Producer and director were Howard Hughes and the players were Errol Flynn, Lili Damita, Paulette Goddard, the Atwater Kents, Woolworth Donahue, the Edward F. Huttons and Prince George of Russia.

The picture was a burlesque of Flynn’s latest for Warners, ___ ___________ __ _____ ____ . It was to be shown at the costume ball of Mrs. John A. Vietor Jr.*

Another burlesque of the same Errolivian masterpiece was made decades later, one which included two notable African-American entertainers, one who had previously won an Academy Award, and a second who has subsequently been one of the world’s highest paid entertainers.

In this decades-later burlesque of the same film, Mel Brooks plays a wine salesman and mohel extraordinaire. There’s a clip, so to speak, near the end of the movie where Mohel Mel has a half-off sale.

I have no knowledge to impart, I just wanted to say thanks for this…this blog is so educational. Also if I was single, I’d probably move to Australia. I am just saying ;)

Thank you, Paula. I’m sure the Aussie guys would like that very much. My sister just returned from several weeks in Sydney and is ready to move there.

Here are a couple of gif clues:

      1) It’s not Pirate Party on Catalina Isle.

      2) And it’s not Star Wars.

      3) But the well known burlesqe of this film made decades after the one Errol & Lili made in Palm Beach did have a well known actor associated with Star Trek.
