Hi Kevin, almost overlooked your question. You posted it to a funny category. Maybe this comment makes people aware of it. I have no idea, but it certainly is an interesting question. I could imagine that they met on a party or two, but don't think there was a closer acquaintance…

Interestingly, Wayne was called in to Warner Bros. to read the script for “Santa Fe Trail” and seriously consider accepting the part of George Custer opposite Flynn. He turned it down and the part was given to Ronald Reagan.
Flynn and Wayne traveled in considerably different circles, and I have not as yet ever come across any info indicating their friendship.

Wayne as Custer… would have been an even odder choice than Reagan, imho.

Ward Bond and John Wayne were said to be friends. Ward Bond played in several Flynn movies. Would Wayne and Flynn's paths have ever crossed because of this connection?

Not really. Work is work and leisure is leisure.

Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams did appear in 'The Alamo' which Wayne funded himself. That would lead me to think that Wayne and Williams may have been friends.

Yes, but I would bet they socialized to some degree. Don't forget about the Wild Goose! (A former mindsweeper in WW2.) I believe I read somewhere a refernce to Wayne attending one of EF's parties.

I lived in Laguna Beach for several years in the 1970's and went to High School there. My mom worked for the City. Our apartment was at 270 Cliff Drive. It was right near the corner where the Cottage Restaurant still is. Anyhow I can still remember one late afternoon, standing out in front watering a palm tree, and looking up, and here comes John Wayne in a convertible auto, left arm on resting on the wheel, right arm slung across the back of the seats, squinting into the setting sun…..my jaw must have dropped a mile. He lived in Newport Beach and was buried there. And of course EF 'did time' in LB filming Captain Blood. You do wonder if they ever spoke or knew one another or shared favorite haunts but never crossed trails or???

They probably did know each other if Johnny Weissmuller Jnr’s memoir, ‘TARZAN – My Father’, is taken into consideration. In it he says (of his dad’s house) “It was a mansion on par with the mansions of Dad’s buddies, Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Raoul Walsh, and Forrest Tucker”, although he doesn’t describe any scenarios where they are actually together. It’s a good book with some good stories in.
