The high hopes were fueled by the high motives of the eloquent revolutionary. Freedom and equal birth rights were the proclaimed pillars of Fidel`s philosophy. Communism seemed not a top priority. The lowest common denominator between El Maximo Lider and Karl Marx was a full beard.
Born out of wedlock under the name of Fidel Hipolito Ruz Gonzalez, Castro was the kid of a wealthy landowner and his housekeeper. Maybe the the itch of being an illegitimate child triggered the urge to become an usuper.
His birth date had to be altered by a year, in order he could attend the Jesuits` college one year earlier than allowed. At university he stood out for his crisp mind and sharp tongue at a early age too. Top baseball outings on Cuba`s canefields led to unconfirmed tryout offers by the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, but he opted for a more deceptive profession and became a lawyer.
He first brought on a law suit against Batista and when it failed to make the military leader leave his office as new Head of State, Semper Fidel organised a coup of his own with 160 men trying to take the second largest barracks with 1500 soldiers. The historic quote “History will absolve me” stems from a letter he wrote out of prison after being captured as one of few survivors.

El Fidel would go on to control the fate and faithfuls of the largest Caribbean isle seeing 11 US presidents come and go, survive 638 assassination attempts acknowledged by the Guiness Book of Records and a nuclear Mexican stand-off at sea between Khrushchev and Kennedy.
El Flynn saw the Robin Hood in Fidel Castro when only the post of Sheriff of Nottingham was vacant.

Great food for thought, muchachoheinz. Castronomically speaking, that is.
Ever the premier showman, trailblazer and entrepreneur, Errol got one of the top news scoops in history when he road out of the Sierra Mastre with Fidel Casto and his Infidels, getting it on film!. That would have been the crown jewel in the career of any top tier war correspondent. And Flynn did it, as a mere part timer. Just astonishing.
Regarding Comrade Castro’s often-alleged Major League baseball talents, they were nonexistent. Rumors of his being scouted by the Big Leagues were a hoax, or should I say hoaks.

Well, diamondheinz, if the Yankees had brought Ruthless Ruz up to pitch at The House That Ruth Built, instead of lefty Whitey Ford, let’s say, then the right-handed leftie from Havana would indeed have changed Baseball history, too. How? — by ending the Yankee Dynasty in the 50s via his profound lack of pitching talent. Even as things worked out, he tried to end the (USA) Yankee Dynasty in the Western Hemisphere and around the globe, failing miserably in that regard also. His failures were Castronomical both in scope and in number.
Embarrassing him and disgracing his regime further, The Beard went ballistic when Cuban Baseball Megastar El Duque defected to the USA and joined the “Capitalist Pig” Yankees!

I imagine Fidel especially ended up hating the New York Yankees for taking an infidel named Whitey (WAY) ahead of him.. Here are Whitey and Mickey rescuing what appears to be either one of the many refugees who loved Castroland so much they risked their lives riding rafts to Florida, and/or perhaps one of the twin redheads who, according to Mel Brooks, visited Errol at the Waldorf Astoria prior to his alleged appearance on The Show of Shows.

Thank you History Heinz for this piece on Cuba and the Flynn connection! Che conducted summary executions by firing squad of thousands of Cubans. He then advocated that Cuba not let the Russians withdraw the infamous missiles from Cuba in their deal with Kennedy to remove NATO missiles from Turkey. Castro sent him to Bolivia to start another revolution mainly to get him out of the way. Che refused to let the Bolivian Communists run their own revolution and they abandoned him with no food or funds. Che and his band began robbing the Indian peasants of the Andes that he was supposed to liberate. They turned him into the Bolivian National Police who with the CIA captured and executed him summarily on the spot! Che surrendered before his own men! The Argentine doctor Che became a beloved martyr to the revolution while Castro sighed in relief! Ralph Schiller

My good pleasure, Rushstreet Ralph. Che sera sera wanted to bring the revoution to the South Americas and at that time wasn´t seeing eye to eye with El Jeffe any more.
We must not forget that soon after the successful toppling of Batista, Castro went to New York, where he was catered, courted and complimented. When the US failed to seal a deal, Fidel looked to the Soviet Union for help. On the day JFK visited Dallas, FC is said to have spent the whole day in front of the radio. Was it payback time for the numerous failed assassination attempts on him? A little retribution for the Bay of Pigs invasion? Communist sympathizer Lee Harvey Oswald had one shot at (in)fame and I think he landed that shot right through the neck of President Kennedy. But the kill was wearing olive and came from that grassy knoll hill.
