Made my day. Thank you for the post. When did they repaint the hull from black to white – anyone?

    And who owns her now?

If anybody knows when the Zaca became Errol`s black pearl, it`s Flynn compadre Ventu Sala, whose dad did maritime time on her as a sailor. www.theerrolflynnblog.com…
Maestro Enzo Musumeci Greco (www.theerrolflynnblog.com…) told me this Story about the current owner of the Zaca, Roberto Memmo. As a young boy in the South of italy, Roberto went up to the rich people`s yachts and sold them fresh fish. Later he made a fortune in the construction business. He is the one who built the port of Monaco. Therefore the Zaca residues at a very prominent post within the port and is also visible on this aerel view at the exact spot where Rory went aboard. www.theerrolflynnblog.com…

I believe Errol gave the Zaca its first coat of “Pirate Black” just west of the Panama Canal on his “Cruise of the Zaca”, before his first sail to Jamaica and then Europe, as he narrates at ~2:01-2:22 in this YouTube video:

Now I remember hearing that too, in the short film.
Thanks so much all for answers!

Thanks, TZ. I should clarify that Zaca had a black hull during its early days, under its original ownership of Templeton Crocker. When the Navy made it part of its WWII West Coast defense fleet, they slapped that awful Navy gray all over it. I think but am not certain that Errol was the first to paint it that magnificent white we see when he first sailed her.

Here she is on one of her historic voyages to the Galapogos in the early Thirties, home of uniquely incredible animal, bird, and marine life, including the Galapogos pengins, flightless, blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, spectacular tropical fish, flightless cormorantand sally light-footed crabs, inter alia. What was Ablemarle Island in Zaca’s early days is now known as Isla Isabela.

WOW, David. How wonderful! Two beauties.

Errol is blessed to have Rory representing him to the world. We are, too.

It must be kinda spooky wandering around the Zaca, her Dad’s favorite freedom ship. Thinking of all the adventures and great sea times on that sailing craft. Memories that are still kept alive by this site and photographs submitted by members. Photos of motley crews by Tim and full sail by ShangHienz are greatly appreciated and Tim’s is very “funny Doca Jones”..LOL! Sailing craft always brings out the adventurer in all of us and the freedom of the sea. Wind and sail, fresh air and the Zaca is a floating mansion too me. Thanks David and Rory for a blast of Zaca this morning….
