            Alexandra Hay so say the credits. I have never seen or heard of her. The other is a Joan Blondell lookalike to me. Happy New Year to all Flynnatics.

      Robert Aldrich directed the classic “The Dirty Dozen” in 1967. The gorgeous blonde starlet is Ewa Aulin who co-starred with Donald Sutherland from “The Dirty Dozen” and Gene Wilder in the delightful and side-splitting hilarious parody of swashbucklers “Start The Revolution Without Me” (1970).         Alexandra Hay is the blonde with Groucho Marx in “Skidoo” (1969) which was a complete stinker. The earlier photo is of Swedish starlet Ewa Aulin who looks pretty close.

          * Regarding the young blond starlet photos above, I believe they are all Alexandra Hay. I do see the resemblance you very observantly point out with Ewa Aulen – and also some with the star of American Beauty, Mena Suvari.

            Tim; You are correct. I browsed both similar-looking actresses and can see that both photos are of Alexandra Hay, not Ewa Aulin. Ewa has a more aquiline nose while Alexandra is very slightly pugged! Thanks Ralph Schiller

    Robert Aldrich directed this thirty-minute short in a search for feature-film financing, starring Peter Finch living scandalously with a much younger actress. The script was written by Kiss Me Deadly’s screenwriter A.I. Bezzerides. It’s been said that this may have been the most expensive screen test ever filmed.

      Well, Paula, I guess the Vincester did occasionally display some kind of sinister, low-priced likeness to the Flynnster. And, after all, much to Errol’s chagrin, he did win the “Best Legs” award during filming of The Private Legs of Elizabeth and Essex (though probably due to a Bette-rigged election, I’d bet.) Nevertheless, our Mitchumless mystery film was not titled after eccentric Howie Hughes’ Jane Russell, but, rather, after Errol’s eccentric wannabe Mother-in-Law.

        I believe it was called The Greatest Mother of Them All (1969) and Peter Finch, who was quite Flynn-like in his disposition, played a down on his luck film director (as opposed to actor) living with a young girl. Finch was very keen on wife-swapping evenings and tried this on my father and his third wife. A veil must be drawn over the rest of this story.

          Speaking of syndicates, I’m (again) Flynnsearching today at the Fountainbleu on Miami Beach. They used to pull quite a few veils in this place, too.

          Good to hear Finch took flight with the birds. … Now we must all wonder if any of this went on during filming of The Warriors with Flynn and Finch. That island of yours sure is a wild place, Miss W! No wonder Errol left LA LA Land.

          p.s. I wonder where Joanne Dru drew the line with them two. After all, her ex-hubbie, Dick, was involved with Errol’s ex. Maybe there was some ex-wife swapping going on!

            Finch and Flynn had similarities (apart from both being Australian). Finch had a scandalous affair with Vivien Leigh which greatly annoyed her husband, Larry Olivier. Vivien was already mentally ill and had a break down during the filming of Elephant Walk (1954), in which Finch played opposite as a heavy drinking planter, a role that Errol would have excelled at.               Incidentally, I have some photos from my father’s albums that I would like to upload directly, but am having difficulty doing so. Or rather, I can’t do it at all. I am at heart a Luddite. Can someone be very kind and tell me how, when there is no url thingy involved?

                Hi PW. It is rather tricky to post up photos until you do it a few times, particularly photos not already up on the internet.

                First let me explain one good way of putting up photos which already have internet addresses, like this one of Errol, for example:

                to make it show with or as a comment, place it between (img) and (/img) with brackets [ ], rather than parentheses( ). (I can’t put up the brackets without an image or failed image getting posted. So, please use [ ], not ( )

                If you prefer another way, there are red letters to the right of the comment box that say “clicking here”. If you click there, you can copy in your internet address and then hit enter. That will bring up the same image in a slightly different way.

      Thank you GT! The actual quote was apparently coined by my father, see below, but I think Oscar Wilde said it first.
      Woodrow Wyatt quotes“A man falls in love through his eyes, a woman through her ears.”
      Am not sure it it’s entirely true though. Artie Shaw got fed up with Lana Turner because she never read a book, same thing with his very short marriage to Ava Gardner, who went on to appear with Errol in The Sun Also Rises. Re that film, I heard a radio interview with Flynn in which he is asked how he feels about being Oscar nominated for the role. But he never was – shamefully. Was it withdrawn? Judging from the interview, his nomination seemed in the bag, which is very puzzling.

        The answer lies/doesn’t lie in the quote below of a different, also distinguished British Isle W, PW. Not Woodrow W., but Winston C .

        Part of the Tony Thomas interview that appears to confirm Errol was nominated can be heard, in the Fast & Furious documentary, from ~ 44:11 to 45:07, as described by Christopher Lee. Perhaps the nomination never really made it past the publicity level, perhaps there was a Lead Actor/Supporting Actor issue, and/or the Hollywood honchos who hated Errol (Jackass Warner among them) did a number on him. Whatever the case, Errol no one topped Flynn at his peak, in the Thirties and Forties. He deserves a Special Academy Award for the astonishing, unparalleled, and immortal work he did during those years.
