Swashbucklin` like Flynn

14 Feb

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

we were fencing back and forth about the paramountal prowess of our Hollywood hero lately.
There were many contenders for the throne of swashbuckler debonair and some very good cloak and dagger films made without Errol. Yet one can envision him guiding in spirit the blades and tongues of the cavaliers that came after him. Flynniards, I summon you to post your favourite films, where Flynn wasn´t in, down below and am looking forward regally to your rapier recommandations.

En garde,

— shangheinz

Definitely a masterpiece with or without Errol. Instead of nixing the package deal of Flynn and Woodsie for Lolita, and rescuing Kirk Douglas` Spartacus, Stanley Kubrick should have done “Barry Flynndon”.

Well, I’m certainly glad you didn’t try to publicly rhyme anything with the title of this post, regalheinz.

I see Errol`s foil still unsoiled, or did he drink from the chalice with malice?

        Hi Heinz;
Just wanted to post this video of Danny Kaye’s fencing scene, just hilarious and a favorite of mine. Lo and behold you posted it already. Do great minds really think alike? Haha!
So, I thought I post some more parts of the movie.

I also thought of Tom Jones, but you are ahead of me!
        Take care!

Hi Toronto Tina, like the legendary Marx Brothers quote goes: “We are like two heads on a neck!” The Austrian ancestry strikes again. Apropos Austria, the 90s Disney movie on D`Artagnan was filmed in Vienna. When Sheen and Sutherland took the their fighting to a lokal bar they ended up arrested. Headbutting a waiter is not very Marquis of Queensberry like.

I’ll take a stab in the dark at this, fencingheinz. Seeing Flynn in this first one is difficult, especially for those brilliantly starring in it now, but that, perhaps, is the point:

I agree with you Gauntletman Tim, in that one Pierce was fierce. Here is the behind the scenes clip about how to become a more flynnlike fencer:

And here is a great and sexy fencing scene between Catherine Zeta Jones and Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro!

          More like Errol – caramba!

Nothing bets the original. With Baz as baddie and a handsome young Tyrone Power as a stand-in like Flynn, each new Zorro will be abhorred.

Here is Tony Curtis who admired Errol! A nice fencing scene out of the movie “The Great Race” and this scene also has a little double take with Errol from “They Died With Their Boots On”.

Things sometimes have a way of coming together!

Tony Curtis remebered Errol fondly, who refered to him as “The new One” at a party. But it was Kirk Douglas who filled the void of many Flynn-less films like in the Vikings (with Flynntimo director- camera man extraordinaire Jack Cardiff aboard!).

Terrific Toronto Tina, now the chandelier is swinging back to your favour in our pas de deux duell. The seventies Remakes of the 3-4 musketeers are very flynnesque in my blog book. There is an Errol angle to this movie also. It was produced by the Salkind Bros., who were initially attached to the lost Flynn film “The Story of William Tell”.

The first one in the Top 10 list of Best of Fencing is my favourite fighting scene between Aussie Guy Pearce (also playing the lead role in the dreadful mockumentary “Flynn”) and Jim Caviezel. It however is easier to envision Errol in the Barrymore movie with Robert Donat as EF imposter boy.

I have yet to see the Princess bride. Kind of reminds me of the film spectacle above. Quite a stretch to fencel Flynn in, but where`s a Willow there`s a way!
