    Hi Lesley;
Good to hear from you again – you have been so silent lately. Hope no problems?
Thank you for posting and sharing these pictures with us. Pity that the one is so small. I sincerely hope you enjoyed the event and I hear that the festival was a hit and will hosted again next year. Hope we all can come – would be fun!
    Best wishes, Tina

I have been very busy and haven't had time to surf the net, I have to say the festival is fantastic
and it woud be great if you guys could come over for it. The scenery alone in Glengariff is the most beautiful I've ever seen and Rory Flynn told me she has been to Ireland many times and loves Ireland.I think it would be a great place for us all to meet each other. Many thanks for your kind words and sorry there is'nt more photos but the batteries in my camera were on their last legs.

Thank You for posting those photos. You would think the post office would have issued a stamp honoring Errol but they didn't. Larry

Never mind the post office you would think the film industry would have honoured him
in some way,but no they continue to treat him like the proverbial “black sheep”its all so petty don't you think?

The Australian post did honour him with a beautiful stamp in 2009!

    Hi Lesley;
Somehow I never quite understand why Errol supposed to be a “black sheep” in the film industry? If so, what is the actual reason?
There are so many Hollywood stars who lived an odd life or a life out of the ordinary, what is so different in this case about Errol to treat him like a “black sheep”? I would like to understand this more fully.
Hundreds of them had a lot more wives or husbands, love affairs, drinking, drugs, killing themselves slowly problems and or any other calamities what Hollywood life brings with it. What is so different about Errol to single him out?
It would be great to find the foundation to it and the real reason!
Has anybody any conclusive insight or proof or whatever to this issue?

Personally I feel its to do with the way he came out in favour of Castro and the cuban situation
at that time , America would have been very wary of a country with a communist leader especially
the country in question being less than 100 miles from american shores.
For what it's worth thats my opinon also the fact that it is well known he liked his women young wouldn't have hepled either. I still like him and have a great respect for the way he embraced life. here's to Errol!

Thanks Lesley – but I don't think so, it couldn't be the Cuban stories as he realized Castro wasn't what he thought at first and he said so publicly. On top of it he acted only as a journalist.
And young woman that is not just privy to him lots of stars had that fetish. Errol wasn't the only one and he only had this fetish because he never grew up mentally, he remained a teenager in his mind till the day he died. I think nobody shook him and said “Errol you are not a teenager you have grown up – get with it or something to that effect. He would have needed a psychiatrist, but may all this as it was.
I feel, if he is black·balled, but is he? – there has to be another reason nothing so small as that – but actually what? The real essence!

I am with you Lesley “Here's to Errol!”
I don't care what he did and I am sure he never ever did anything really bad at all. He lived his life as best as he could considering all the adverse circumstances he had to cope with. He did what people do, we all have the good and the not so good in us! Errol was a very good person and I will never let anybody talk about him badly if I can help it!
    Have a great day!

Yes, Inga I noticed and I purchased them, they are beautiful Australian postage stamps. He also was in the olden days on real postage stamps in the USA. I wonder if some of those would be still on sale somewhere? Maybe we should contact some philatelist – one day and see. They most likely would be very expensive if they still exist?

I don't think it's appropriate to talk about philatelists here. Topics about sexual deviants will only cause problems. Next thing you know bloggers will be discussing who's a thespian and who isn't.

I have heard mention of this before Tina, you ladies aren't the first to raise an eyebrow at a possible 'black-balling' but I just don't see a case for it personally, certainly not in recent years.
I can see a lot of reasons why Hollywood would be 'lukewarm' towards Errol at the latter stage of his career and in the years after his death. I don't think you can dismiss the excessesive drinking, drug-taking and lack of professionalism so easily.
    best wishes,
    Brian.

Quite awhile back I had some dealings with an old gentleman that dealt in stamps and Errol had sent him a great number of 4 X 5 envelopes with his name printed on the back flap, in pencil on the front were several countries in Europe and South America inside were stamps from the 1940’s, the gentleman would then send them to Errol when he had collected a great number. I still have 27 of the envelopes and there are close to 100 stamps in them. The envelopes are the real deal, I don’t think anyone would go to the trouble of having them printed up , them collecting a bunch of WW II era stamps and filling them, and selling them for what I paid for them! I would add a picture but at 73, I am not that good at posting more than the printed word.

Ok people I may have opened a can of worms here , the bottom line is Errol Flynn has been ignored by the movie industry at large no OFFICIAL accolades have ever been given to him in hollywood, his own daughters have campaigned vigoursly for official recognition to no avail. Now the question is WHY? was he not good enough? Is he not the benchmark for all action heroes? does he not stand shoulder to shoulder with other thespians of his era? WHY is he being ignored? Does anyone have the answer so we can put this to bed. One last thought there is a mindset in some walks of life and that is “the sin is not in the wrong doing it is getting caught.”

Could we maybe just pick some of the other “thespians” and compare: which honours ave been given to them which have not been given to Errol? Maybe it is just our feeling that he is being ignored, and others are so as well? I mean, it cannot be the only criterium that he never won an Oscar – there are other stars who have not won one either. So what is it that others have MORE than Errol?

    Hello Lesley,
I think it can be easy to get into this anti-Flynn mindset in regards to how he has been treated by the Industry, mainly due to the fact that the campaign to get Errol an honoury Oscar fell through… but the rules are pretty clear on that one – you need to be alive to be awarded one of those things.
It isn't really out there that Errol received an Academy award nomination for one of his later films (I think it was The Sun Also Rises) but for certain reasons this was withdrawn. That gives the indication that the Academy was more than willing to offer recognition for Errol's work.
I personally think all talk of black-balling is a way too heavy. In my opinion, Hollywood is starting to 'get' Flynn more and more and 'get' the effect that his films have on people. I think the future is bright!!
    best wishes,
    Brian.

Hello Brian while I agree to a small extent in what you say let me pose a question to you, is Errol Flynn thought of in the same glowing terms as Spencer Treacy, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Clarke
Gable? NO when Errol Flynn's name is mentioned it is normally accompanied by a little snigger and his reputation for womanizing and drinking is the first stop for a discussion about him,not his legacy need I say more, this is the type of thing I'm talking about hard to put a name on it but you do see where I'm coming from. I do hope that is the end of this thread and if I go on a bit well that's just me, cheers.

There is no reply button at Lesley's post therefore my reply is here.
I have to agree wholeheartedly with Lesley!
Many speakers of the industry speaking about Errol mostly make a sly innuendo, a most unfitting or unnecessary remark attached with an sneering giggle about women or sex – fitting or not.
Like implying – oh, isn't that funny or so interesting to know about him. To me quite disrespectful!
Please correct me if I am wrong but I think the big industry media is very sparing, reserved and holding back in praising Errol? I wonder why?
And yet he contributed equally as well to the movie industry as any and all of the biggest and best stars of his time – as he was one of them!
It is so sad, very unjust and extremely unfair!

I have the picture of one 25 cents stamp in my part 2 tribute I made for his 100th birthday.
I am quite please with this two part tribute video, having 8300 visitors in total for it is not a bad show – right. Lots of fans still out there.

This reply button thing is a real problem, Tina, I posted a comment above asking what other stars have that Errol does not have? Except for the Oscar… Can we PROVE anything, or is it just our feeling that Errol is being ignored or spoken of the way you say? Have you got a quotation here?

The picture in your video does not look like a real stamp for me. It looks like a photo montage. Also, you say that there are different denominations of it? I don't think so, honestly. I will post what I have found this weekend, I think, but the one in your video seems a fake. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Here is the stamp picture and I used to have one with another denomination I think it was a dollar, not sure, but I lost it around the time I made the video (very upsetting at the time) that why I only used the one stamp otherwise I would have used both stamps.
I don't think this stamp is a fake!

    Robert “the reply-button thief” here:
The stamp is a fake. The U.S. Postal Service has never released a stamp with Flynn's picture on it. There was once a move to have Elvis put on a stamp and the organization used a portrait of him I had done for Caesar's palace to create a faux stamp. Some people seeing it out of context may have thought the stamp was legit, similar to what I think has happened here.
Btw, the Postal service did eventually honor Elvis with a stamp, but with someone else's art. Damn.

    Hello Lesley/Tina:
I think the Flynn acting legacy is gaining more and more momentum as the years go by. Is it on a par with the names you mentioned? I don’t know!
I think a lot of this comes down to Errol’s lack of professionalism, maybe the Industry has been slow to recognise someone who seemed to treat his ‘work’ with such little respect. The names you have mentioned; Gable, Tracy, Grant etc… were all consummate professionals when it came to their craft – Flynn was not.
Remember that this wild, roistering, womanising legacy of Flynn’s was something that he helped to build, something he encouraged and worked damned hard at. Isn’t it understandable that in some peoples eyes this is what Errol Flynn is perhaps best-known for?
But I tend to think that the trend of negativity that seemed to attach itself to Errol’s name after the Higham book is slowly starting to fade away. Flynn is on the up and this seems to trace back to the brilliant McNulty book and the release of the truly stunning DVD box-sets, which also included the very, very positive documentary ‘The Adventures of Errol Flynn’. In my eyes, those box-sets are what Hollywood have to say about Errol Flynn.
Of course, that isn’t to say that there isn’t the odd ‘cheap’ journo out there who will re-hash the Higham tripe but that seems to becoming more and more unfashionable. I get the feeling that most sensible ‘film’ people are now starting to evaluate the Flynn body of work and realising that what he did on-screen will never be surpassed and that perhaps his films are worthy of more discussion than the ‘image’ that Flynn helped build.
    best wishes,
    Brian.

No REPLY button – so it is here!
You say: “Can we PROVE anything, or is it just our feeling that Errol is being ignored or spoken of the way you say? Have you got a quotation here?”
No proof – except mostly a sly remark in a jokingly way is attached to his name and like I said before there are hundreds of Hollywood Greats who had more woman than Errol ever encountered, but Errol, poor guy, ended up with this sly little stigma. Just his luck!

    Hi Brian;
I think you summarized it very well. There is no doubt that Errol did not take things as serious as he should have and is partially at fault on this stigma surrounding him. I am glad you are thinking it is going away, which I did have the feeling too and TCM always shows his movies. He was one of the GREATS and that should be remembered not his silly little idiosyncrasies!
After all everybody has stupid, silly, little idiosyncrasies!
I just saw “Thanks your Lucky Stars” on Wednesday past.
Man alive is he good in this parody of a British seaman. I saw it on big screen very close up and could see his expressions wonderfully clear – just the greatest – and his cockney accent and dancing steps – just perfect – all of it! What a talent!
    All the best to you!

Since when is America prudish?, maybe a little more conservative in some ways, but when it comes to the media they are all sensationalists, coarse, rough and tough. If they can help it they wouldn't leave a good hair on you, they want the scalp!
I am not able to record on a CD from the TV only on a tape and you could not see the tapes as we have two different systems the PAL and the SYCOM – don't know the spelling.

His hands are bleeding and he is sad!
No these are the two systems – either you in Germany have SYCOM and we have to PAL or it is vise versa. Way back when used to get tapes from Europe and had to let be transformed into the system we use. Just forgot who has what and really what doe it matter anyway.

They must have changed it as the TV stuff has changed here a lot in the last few years with the new HD = High Definition etc, which you had in Europe many years earlier. I am talking back in the 1980/90 when I received those tapes from Europe.
What is PAL and NTSC standing for?

In the London National Portrait Gallery, there is currently an exhibtion: “The Glory of the Gods”, with pictures of Hollywood stars from the 1920s to 50s from the Kobal Collection. I paid my 6 Pounds and had Great Expectations, but was thoroughly disappointed: not ONE picture of Errol!! Not ONE! He was only mentioned once when they displayed a photo of Joan Blondell and said that this was taken at the time when she was shooting “Perfect Specimen” with Errol Flynn. So much about this topic.
