      I agree with David! The French Foreign Legion! Too bad Errol Flynn missed out on Beau Geste (1939) one of the best adventure films ever made starring Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, Robert Preston, Susan Hayward, Brian Donlevy, Albert Dekker, J. Carrol Naish, and a young Broderick Crawford! Believe it or not after World War 2, film star Glenn Ford had gotten drunk in Paris and actually joined the French Foreign Legion. He woke up in the legion barracks with a hangover, and Columbia mogul Harry Cohn had the U.S. State Department get the French Republic to discharge him! Ralph Schiller

    Bob, you took it and made the correct French connection.

    David, you are very likely correct that Errol must have at some time (at least once) considered joining the FFL for adventure, though I personally don’t know that to be so.

    Shangheinz & Ralph, you are SO very, very close!! Here’s another clue for you all to get you the microstep further needed for the answer I was thinking of!

        Chapeau, also, to all in the international EFB brigade who helped get this team answer!!

        Yes, there were reports that Errol’s first TV “vidfilm” series was to about the French Foreign Legion, under the proposed name “March or Die”, with Errol a narrator, and possibly an actor, too. (Maybe much in the same way he appeared later in Errol Flynn Theatre.)

        Doug-Fair Productions was to produce this series for CBS-TV. Here’s Doug-Fair’s “Bulldog Drummond”, a character Errol may have once played in his British theater days. Fairbanks Jr. claimed to have had a rather significant role in launching Errol’s Hollywood career. There is also an unsubstantiated claim that pre-Hollywood Errol may have also been an extra in “Mimi”, which starred DF Jr.

          I agree with Ralph. It`s a shame that Errol didn`t get to be a desert son. Even Laurel and Hardy or Abbot and Costello did get a call up for desert duty. Flynn`s best man Freddie McEvoy had an assignment in Robert Florey`s “The desert song”. French Foreign Legion flics like “Outpost in Morocco”, “Fort Algiers”, “Desert Sands” & “Desert Legion” would have come sandy, ahm handy for our Hollywood hero at that time of his career.

            Very true, legionheinz, and I agree with you and Sir Ralph. Then again, Cecil B. Demille observed that Errol “always looks out of place on dry land”.

            After all, despite his often dry sense of humor, look at that often awful, Sahara soap opera, Another Dawn. Some moviegoers found that an appalling waste of time and almost deserted Flynn.

            Heinz; I was a member of the ‘Sons Of The Desert’ because I’ve always loved the Laurel & Hardy films including the two comedy gems they did about the French Foreign Legion. Although C.B. DeMille is wrong about Errol Flynn who excelled anywhere dry land or not, I agree that ‘Another Dawn’ is a missed opportunity. Mind you it was a hit because it co-starred Kay Francis then the top female film star in the industry. Women in the 1930’s depression turned out in droves to see the latest fashions Miss Francis wore in all of her “Women’s pictures”. For this one, Errol Flynn was just frosting on the cake. Even Burt Lancaster made a foreign legion epic ‘Ten Gallant Men’ (1951) which was fun but ‘Desert Sands’ would have been perfect for Flynn. The budget and sets were impressive in this film with exciting battle sequences between the legionnaires and the riffs, but Ralph Meeker was weak as the lead. For one thing he was too American as all Legion officers are French. The other thing is that who could believe that Meeker’s Captain could seduce a stunning-looking Marla English’s Riff princess into betraying her bloodthirsty brother and her own people to save the legion garrison from a massacre? Not the other Ralph! ‘Fort Algiers’ is good fun with Raymond Burr and a gorgeous Yvonne de Carlo but the battle sequences were lifted from ‘Outpost In Morocco’ (1949). A tip of my kepi hat to you!               Rushstreet Ralph, I can’t wait to meet you wearing your tropcal helmet at O’Hare!
              Well, Laurel and Hardy were two formidable desert sons of a sun. My favourite movie of them is “Fra Diavolo”. Now the French Foreign Legion has another connection to Errol. While filming his Will Tell in Courmayeur, a young girl was murdered sun bathing in the nude near a river. The whole film crew was curfewed, until the murderer, who had set out to join the FFL was captured.

                Hollywood Heinz; “Fra Diavolo” is one of their greatest films and a favorite of mine. It is also their only swashbuckler! I do love ‘Bonnie Scotland’ (1935) where they join a Scottish regiment and get shipped out to the land of mystery, India! I love all their films from the first to the very last. A German author wrote an excellent book on their final film “Atoll K’. We need another author to write one on the ‘William Tell’ unmaking adventure. Fascinating! Ralph Schiller

      The pilot lists Ian Fleming as Churchill. You have taken us further down the line to the roots of Bond. Bulldog Is behaving rather bondish, don’t you think, Middleman Tim? Fleming would go on to release “Casino Royale” one year later and allow a TV movie to be made with flynntima Linda Christian as first Bond girl. Unfortunatly that pilot was a plummet.
