    Now this got my attention. If it were not for Stan Lee many millions would not have read anything. I had very low reading comprehension as a kid in the 50’s. Stan and others gave us pictures and words in bubbles that described the action we were seeing and we were READING! From there I was able to read and understand complex story lines like Dune and other books. Cheers to this man of 94 years, a very special writer that helped millions of kids to read and dream!

      You hit Thor’s hammer right on the nail, Tymes. The Fantastic 4 were the reason I could spell KABOOOSCH at age five. The Fabulous Flynn became a superhero in tights for me way later. Bless Stan Lee, may he live to see a hundred

    I believe the film Stan was working that night may have been Wuthering Heights. James Roosevelt was a “trophy executive” for Sam Goldwyn during that timeframe, which likely led to “Madame President’s” attendance at the premiers in April 1939 – at The Pantages on Hollywood Boulevard, then at The Rivoli on Broadway. Stan would have been sixteen at that time, working at one of the most majestic movie palaces of them all.

    Here’s Errol, Lili and James having the “Gold Plate Breakfast” at The Carlton Hotel in D.C. two-and-a-half months or so earlier that same year, on January 31. Presidential Birthday Balls were held annually for FDR every January 30. After the balls, select attendees were invited to a “Gold Plate Breakfast” – at $20-a-guest – quite a huge sum during the Great Depression!

      Roosevelt Jr. seems to have been quite a Flynn regular as this pic at John Perona’s shows. He could have made it as an actor himself for his grin reminds me of Gwynplaine, the man who laughs….

    How about this for marvelous, broadwayheinz: Immediately following the stellar opening music and credits of My Favorite Year, The Rivoli can be seen in the very first scene, just as the words “My Favorite Year” are narrated!

    I wonder if Stan knows of this Rivoli-Flynn connection? If not, one of us should tell him! He might enjoy seeing that!

    P.S. Here’s how The Rivoli looked. Perhaps waxing poetic, the marquis shown in My Favorite Year shows a film probably intended to be House of Wax (coincidentally with Flynnmate/filmmates Vincent Price and Paul Picerni.) BUT, I think, Rear Window would have been more accurate, as House of Wax was released in ’53, Rear Window in ’54. (For the record, Errol’s other Flynnmate/filmmate, Nat King Cole, released the absolutely awe-inspiring recording of Stardust in ’57, circa Istanbul.)

      Stan Fleen has never stopped making references to Errolee, Gentlemarquis Tim. He’s a swell dresser, a laugh and good with the ladies, A life like in the movies…
